I lived in New Orleans for 20 years and my wife was born and raised there. When we moved to Kentucky, we missed the food from New Orleans. We've been on a search for replacements for our favorite restaurants for years and never really found any place that could stand up to our favorite Mexican restaurant in New Orleans.
Until tonight. Tonight we tried Capilla. And we were instantly surprised. The salsa was amazing from the start. And after we ordered, the food didn't come out in 5 or 10 minutes like most other places. That let us know it was actually being freshly cooked. And it definitely was.
My wife ordered the chili rellenos. For context, she teaches culinary. And she said the peppers could not have been frozen. The texture was fresh peppers. And they gave her two. And it contained extra ingredients she's not used to being in chili rellenos. She said it's the best she's ever had. And that's her favorite Mexican dish. She also tried their guacamole and it was definitely also freshly made. Another of her favorite dishes, and they knocked it out of the park.
I had the Don Jose Pollo. This was chicken with mole sauce. The chicken breast was butterflied and cooked and seasoned perfectly. It had the perfect, mouth watering umami taste. And the mole sauce, which I've never had before, was amazing. It made the dish even better.
We both had refried beans and rice, and these were obviously not from cans. There were fresh veggies in the rice and the beans had that crack on them that usually only happens when homemade. We also tried their cheese sauce and were highly impressed.
To sum this all up, sorry Adobe Cantina in Louisiana... we've found a new favorite Mexican restaurant... better than anywhere else we've ever been. And that's Capilla Kitchen &...
Read moreThis place is a gem! We were in town from KC for four evenings, decided to eat here when we first got in, and I had to go back two nights later for more. The salsa might just be the best I've had at any Mexican restaurant. It is so fresh and flavorful, I nearly drank it. Kiddos got the chicken taco entree and kids quesadilla with chicken, and both had thumbs up approvals. I had the steak and chicken fajitas, and while the meat itself didn't seem super seasoned, it was perfect with the salsa and guacamole on top! Hubby's grande burrito with chicken was, well, grande 😆 . Aptly named! And delicious, he said. Made for two belly-filling meals, and none went to waste.
On my second visit, I got four street tacos a la carte, two asada and two pastor. The salsa verde was the absolute perfect amount for all four tacos, and they were superb. Possibly the best pastor tacos I've had! The asada was great, but that pastor will be the new standard and I'll probably just be missing them until we can visit again. I was very pleasantly surprised to receive the chips and salsa, in my bag, as well!
Both times, the staff were excellent. Friendly and attentive, keeping busy even though it wasn't super busy inside. The place was very clean. I think we saw the owner in there observing the first night, and I hope that he's proud of what's going on in there. Also hope they can get more business, because they deserve to stick around for...

#2. Every employee in there is always moving. Always working. Always cleaning. Always friendly.
#3. They are still fairly new. They get super busy and sometimes is can be hard to keep up. People do make mistakes, but theirs won't be a daily occurrence. Relax!
#4. Between my family and I, we had Fajitas and Street Tacos. Fajita's are kind of hard to mess up, they still got a 5 star for that. Street Tacos... fantastic! Freshly cut Cilantro. I am a foodie... I have eaten food all over the world, but their Flan... it is not ordered by a bulk food company; it is HANDMADE. It is absolutely delicious. Whoever's Madre or Abuela made it, perfecta! Our son had chicken fingers off the kids meal and had no complaints!
