When I travel, I love interacting with people. They can steer you to the best places in their states, towns or cities. While at the Chazen Museum of Art, I spoke to a security guard about a place that serves good barbeque. I told him that I was from Kansas and we know “Q”. Immediately he suggested Bob’s Bitchin’ Barbeque. With a name like that, I had to check it out. Located in a small downtown area, the 1905 building had been home to a couple of hardware stores and used as a billiard hall. Bob’s serves their meat hickory wood smoked in-house dry and seasoned. It can be served “wet” allowing the sauce to caramelize over heat or “dry” to allow you to sample the eight different sauces that you’ll find at your table. Under the dinner section of the menu I ordered the Sampler platter; 1/3 rack of ribs, pulled pork and a pork chop that’s brined and hickory smoked that gives a ham taste. I had a choice of two made from scratch sides; coleslaw and baked beans. It also comes with a side of corn bread. The taste was incredible as the meat fell off the bones with every bite. I’m serious. Those ribs were so good I would slap someone if they tried to take my food away! My favorite sauces were as follows: Original, which has a hickory smoked flavor. RBQ, “Sweet with a little fizz with Sprecher’s Root Beer.” Mango Red Pepper, “Sweet with heat.” I enjoyed the coleslaw with a kick of sweetness and the cornbread was moist and tasty. Bob’s bragging rights are that in 2015, his Carolina sauce won 1st place in the Mustard division of the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Sauce contest in Kansas City. In 2016, it brought home the bronze. And to think I had to travel to Dodgeville, WI to find all this out. Overall: If this place was any closer, I would be a regular. In the meantime, I will make the trip again in the near future for those melt in your mouth...
Read moreMy wife and I decided to take about a 45 minute road trip to Dodgeville yesterday with our daughter. We wanted to try some place different than are usual places likes North & South and Beef Butter BBQ. When we walked in, We pleasantly surprised on how large the place was. The person at the front desk was very friendly and seated us right away. Once seated, a Waitress showed up in about 2 minutes and asked what we wanted to drink. We looked over the menu and our daughter decided that she wanted to try 2 different things (Ribs & Pulled Pork). I went with my usual which is Brisket (Love me good brisket). My wife decided on the Jerk Chicken Salad. My daughter ended up loving her pulled pork (very plain) & applesauce. She tried a couple of different sauces but decided to just eat it plain. She didn't try her Ribs although they looked very good. My brisket was very tender and very good. They also gave a very good portion of it which was exciting. It included some sliced and some cut up. The original sauce is smoky and sweet but I was a bigger fan of the Razzberry sauce. My wife's jerk chicken was a little dry and not very spicy. She said she would get something different next time. Overall I would recommend this place if you are in the area. I just have 2 little things for them. #1 - Some crayons and a coloring page or something would be really cool for the kids. The sticker was nice leaving. #2 - Add Brisket to the Kids Menu or option to buy brisket on the side if possible (My daughter loves Brisket and I think other kids do also). North & South has add-on that you can get which is either 4 or 6 ounces of Brisket which is perfect for her and we share some of our...
