Capital Seafood Market — Restaurant in Durham

Respectable, but disappointing.

I had an order placed and received the Fried Founder, Potato Salad, Green Beans and Fries.

I ordered thru grub-hub and my initial order was never delivered, not gonna fault the restaurant for that but because my 2nd order was placed later to closing time I may not have gotten as fresh a dish as I would have normally.

But... Rating the food I did receive it was ok. Not bad but not... good either. The fish was lightly breaded and had a distinct flavor to it, but was rather soggy and didn't have near what a fried fish should get as far as that crisp bite. The fish beneath the breading was very tasteless, and without the seasoning packets and cocktail packets that came, it was almost inedible. Its a personal preference, but the blandness inherent to most fish is offset by the breading for me, and having soggy, loose breading was... mediocre.

The sides, were similarly bland and devoid of flavor. Not bad just... bland. The potato salad especially, it came in a tiny.... 2oz disposable ramekin? It wasn't really a decent amount for a side, literally 2 bites and its gone. No real seasoning or anything else to note. The Beans, tasted and felt straight like green beans out of a can, not much more than what you would expect. The French fries were the best part of the meal, almost perfectly salted and the included hunts ketchup packets were a good taste.

All in all, While there is certainly potential, I'd have to order again or visit in person because my experience today was moderate at best. Definitely would at least try it again, but the experience today leaves me wanting more and a bit...

I had the pleasure of visiting my 93-year-old aunt today, Thursday, October 3, 2024 in Durham, NC and she specifically requested this place. I arrived around 10:45 AM to order and pick up lunch for her. Although the restaurant's takeout side wasn’t officially open until 11:00 AM, the extremely friendly cashier was more than happy to take my order and even recommended excellent suggestions. My experience at Capital City Seafood was outstanding, thanks to the exceptional service provided by the cashier. I hate I did not get her name. She truly went above and beyond to ensure my visit was remarkable. The seafood at Capital City Seafood is beautifully displayed, highlighting the freshness and quality of their offerings. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with a variety of options. This young lady made me feel valued as a customer. Not only was the seafood fresh and flavorful, but the prices were also quite reasonable. Capital City Seafood strikes an excellent balance between quality and affordability, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to enjoy a wholesome meal without overspending. Overall, I highly recommend Capital City Seafood, especially if you get served by this wonderful young lady. Her dedication to providing an exceptional customer experience, combined with the incredible food options, makes for an unforgettable dining experience. The chicken wings, shrimp, whiting, coleslaw, collards and fries were all delicious—seasoned to perfection and made with love. I visited this place on my lunch break and was pleasantly surprised. This is a fresh fish market that also has menu options. There were many lunch specials to choose from. I ended up getting the whiting fish and shrimp combo that included 2 sides, hush puppies and a sweet tea.

All this totaled up to about $7.50. Great value for your money!

Pros: Everything was fresh and hot. The whiting was delicious and seasoned well as were the green beans, coleslaw, and hush puppies.

Cons: The shrimp still had the lining in it which I didn't like and wasn't expecting as this is a fresh fish market. I was hoping they had homemade tater sauce but they had packets.

Also, customer service seemed a bit irritated when I asked about the status of my order, as I had stepped out after ordering. I waited in line to ask and was swiftly redirected to another line to wait more only to ask another staff member. All the while my order was ready and waiting in the window. The first staff member could have checked.

I asked about silverware and was told with a matter of fact attitude that it was inside the actual plate and not the bag. This was my first time there so I was not aware. I think they should consider that this is the case for many customers. I attributed it to it being busy and hot.
