Update May 2025
Prices have jumped, but still the best chili dog in LA. The iconic “snap” wasn’t there today, but flavors were. Hoping it was just sitting in the water too long or something when craving a dog, this is definitely the spot.
Update June 2023
The snap is back! Delicious and must try for any Angeleno. I don’t miss the dodger dogs anymore, but I sure did miss this place. The one good thing about going back into the office is being able to visit local lunch spots again from my childhood. Had to try my dog two different ways, plain with mustard/chili only and one with pickles/chili, cheese and mustard. Both were great. Maybe my new go to order.
Update Aug 2022 Dogs no longer have the snap and texture I loved :( will try again to see if just a bad day or new recipe. They will lose a star or two if the recipe changed, because that was the uniqueness of these dogs.
Update 10/4/21
I love this place! Best damn chili dogs in So Cal. Tough to get to ELA these days as I don’t live as close as I used to, but worth a trip every now and then.
I actually tried a chili burger for the first time ever and happy I did. Not better than the chili dog, but a good burger with the best chili = really good chili burger. Still had room for a chili dog, as long as i cut out the fries, so all good. Might be my new regular order. Fries are over rated :)

Best chili dogs around. I like mine with everything, which means onions and mustard but also add tomatoes and pickles. Hots dogs have a snap to them and chili is delish. Service is always friendly and if you mention you grew up on this stuff, plan to to talk about some of the glory days with them. Fries are always good and love getting some grape soda which is old school as well. Make sure to grab some yellow chiles too! Prices are fair for the amount of...
Read moreI saw this place on my Instagram feed and decided to give it a try. This place is 29 miles from my home and took me 49 minutes to drive there, but let me tell you it was well worth the time, distance and effort to get there. 😀 This is a little local spot that has been open for 80 years, WOW that's a long time and the food is the reason. I tried 2 of the chili dogs chili fries and a coke(free refills). Ok the chili dogs were crazy good soft bun and a beef frank 😋 with onions and mustard with tons of chili on top 😋 the chili fries were cooked perfect nice and crispy with a mountain of chili on top, it was stacked so high I couldn't finish it all. Honestly speaking I could have gotten away with just ordering one chili dog and been full, but I had the munchies so I ordered two.😜 The staff was friendly and courteous, the service was fast the food is prepared right in front of you. This is a local joint and when I told the server that I had driven all the 2ay from Orange County he and the people in line were astonished that I would driven so far just to try it out., had some great convos with the people in line one of which told me he's been coming to Chronis since 1957, Man that is a long time but like I said it's the great food that keeps these folks coming back for more. They have a chili burger 😋 that the server said I definitely needed to try, so I know I'll be going back for sure. You gotta try this little local joint for sure, it's well worth the drive. Enjoy 😊 Tell them Smokey Fred sent you 😉 SmokeyFredsays You gotta try this place 😋 Follow me on Instagram...
Read moreThe legendary Chronis'. What can I say? I've been coming to this east l.a. staple grease pit since I was a kid, and it's still the best chili dog in all of L.A. County. The snap, the rich flavor of their beefy meaty chili....even without all the toppings its perfect. Oh and hey, the pastrami is not as big as a lot of local hamburger stands, but the flavor and simple but perfect prep makes it stand out above the rest (except maybe Arry's in Montebello on a good day!) along with some pretty bomb 💣 french/chili fries. Never would have thought throwing slices of American on chili fries would work...but it does. Do yourself a favor and come hungry, cuz you're gonna wanna eat more than one dog. If you're not comfortable with old school hamburger stand environments then you might wanna get yours to go, but if you're down you can dine "in" (gives more of a baseball diamond snack shack vibe for the seating situation) and enjoy the busy whittier...
