I came in around 5:30 to order takeout for my 13 year old son and I. The only employees were 2 teenagers. One immediately informed me that they were out of the first 2 things I wanted to order; Brisket and Burnt Ends as well as the 2 sides I intended to order, cole slaw and potato salad. No big deal, it happens, maybe that's a good sign, but it was kind of early. So anyway I look at the menu and notice that one of the Wednesday specials is Smoked Chicken Wings, so I order 20 of those and the cashier says "we dont have chicken wings" as if its not on the menu, so I asked if it was the special today? She went to the back, came back and says "it was the special, but we must have run out cause I dont see any back there?" So I just order two of the other Wednesday "Special". A smoked chicken, bacon and Swiss sandwich($10 w/no side). One for myself and one for my son. One with Carolina style w/onions and one with sweet bbq.
Drove straight home with them. We live less than 5 minutes away.
What an utter disappointment. The amount of every ingredient except the bacon(a standard 2 slices) was shockingly skimpy. The amount of chopped chicken did not even come anywhere close to covering the bottom bun. I laughed out loud out of shock. There was so little swiss cheese it might as well have not been present at all and the whole sandwich was dry as a bone on top of all that, which means dry chicken and almost no sauce(and only an extremely small amount of onion on mine). I had also ordered 2 other sides, one being a "premium side", The smoked Mac & cheese($3.50), which wasn't terrible but wasn't good either, it very much tasted like it was made from a commercial, processed cheese sauce and then smoked(not a scratch sauce made with real cheese) and also smoked baked beans($3) which were actually fairly decent. The bill ended up at right at $30 for 2 sandwiches and 2 sides, and I can't think of feeling more ripped off at the end of a meal in a recent memory. If an adult had been working there I'd have drove back opened the sandwiches and respecfully asked for a refund but I honestly just didn't feel comfortable confronting two teenage girls to express my frustration and disappointment with the order and ask for a refund.

Read moreUsed to be 5 stars, but is under new ownership and some things have changed. Firstly, the food is still amazing(why it still gets 4 stars, not 3), but the past 2 Fridays they've been out of pulled pork by 2pm! They also keep runing out of bread and have get the cheap stuff from the local grocer. The prices have also increased by about $2 per item which moves it from an "eat all the time" kinda place to an "eat occasionally" place. They have also hired many new people which makes the kitchen seem crowded as well as feeling rushed to pay and get out (decrease in perceived service care/quality). I still recommend their Thursday sausage sandwiches and the weekend ribs and tips, just don't expect it to be the "drive out of your way" good deal we were accustomed to under the old ownership.
Update 9/4/20 Rating reduced to 3 stars. They have discontinued the historically sell-out smoked sausage Thursday special. This has been what set this restaurant far above the other area bbq joints to me, even the ones that also carry a version of smoked sausage. I have been known to bring large groups of people there including traveling business contacts(that continue to bring up how good the sausage was and how they want it again when next in town). It has been replaced with a smoked thick cut (0.5-0.75" thick) bologna sandwich on their menu. This is novel, so I tried it when the cashier told us the sausage had been discontinued. It was ok. Glad it was only $6 or I would have been mad. On the bright side I've been going there for lunch or dinner(sometimes both) almost every Thursday that they've been open for the last 7 years and now the pull is gone so I will be exploring other establishments to dine. The pulled pork is still good and at least they have Potatos with the new owners, but I can get that about anywhere. If you happen to be driving by and hungry, still worth a stop, but don't go out...
