A friend told me about the Midwest special, BPT (breaded pork tenderloin). After looking at several places, Edinburgh seemed like the one I needed to try the most, due to the massive size of the BPT.
A couple friends joined me and we left Chicago early in the morning for the 4 hour drive ahead of us to make it to Edinburgh around lunchtime.
We arrived and was met by an unsuspecting, rather plain little building that reminded me of an old Rax or Wendy's restaurant due to the frontage and windows. Upon entering we were met by a pretty standard looking front counter and a sign that said wait to be seated. There were a couple of young ladies working who told us to sit where we wanted and one of them would be right over. Shortly after seating ourselves, one of the two brought over menus and asked what we wanted to drink. Drinks were brought out and served in basic styrofoam cups with lids and a straw. We had looked over the menu but had only come for one thing and she sensed that. She made a remark when asking if we were ready to order with something along the lines of "I probably know what you guys are here for". We asked about the BPT and what the "deluxe" option on the menu was for. Deluxe comes with Lettuce, tomato, onion and I thought cheese but none of us got cheese despite ordering deluxe. No loss though.
She was very pleasant and and friendly when taking the order and interacting with us. The food was brought out extremely quick and we were also given condiments prior to our plates being brought out. Before we started eating she asked if we needed anything else and mentioned that while people certainly do finish it, a lot of people take the majority of theirs home and we started eating.
A few minutes into our meals she brought out some to-go containers and laughed when we said we'd try to finish them. We got to work and started planning the best course of attack on the massive piece of meat sitting in front of each of us. We began by cutting off pieces of the overhanging fried pork and then stacking pieces on the bun with the previously mentioned, deluxe toppings. As for the pork itself, it's hammered out pretty thin but still has a good amount of thickness to it, it's not paper thin and you know you're eating more than just breaded cardboard. The flavor is very simple with a good breading and a nice pepper flavor. The meat was juicy and adding some of the provided hot sauce helped balance and round out the flavor.
There were red faces, sweaty brows and a hoodie and hat removed but we all finished our BPT and dreaded the 4 hour drive back to Chicago that awaited us.
During our entire visit there were a few couples and families that came and went from the dining room as we continued to work through the challenge in front of us and the 2 employees were working on keeping up with any customers or tables that needed cleared as a party would leave.
If you're looking for a BPT you have to check out the Edinburgh Diner. It's a fun experience and the price is also a good deal for...

After a brief absence I'm back with a new review.
Today some friends and myself ventured south on our motorcycles. We left Frankfort shortly after 9:00 AM slicing through the countryside like a hot knife through butter. We traveled through Lebanon, Danville, Clayton, Bellville , Monrovia and Martinsville. Then we caught Mahalasville road out of Martinsville to Low Gap road that took us past Lemon Lake. Eventually we wound up in Nashville Indiana and took a break. We worked up a powerful hunger doing all that riding. We left Nashville and worked our way North East through the beautiful hills and curves to Edinburgh for lunch.
Edinburgh Diner was our lunch destination. I had heard of their famous breaded tenderloin for years and I finally got to try it for myself.
Tony went with the Gyro and fries, Brad had a Philly cheese and fries and Randy had Swiss mushroom burger and fries. I didn't hear any complaints so everyone must have been satisfied.
Now back to my tenderloin sandwich. Let me say everything I had heard was true. This sandwich was huge and had just the right spice in the breading to make my taste buds do a happy dance. It was pounded pretty thin but not too thin. It was meaty with no gristle. Actually I thought it was just right and I can't see how it could be any better. The cheese, mayonnaise, onion and pickle were the perfect garnish for this superb sandwich. The fries were hot and thick cut. A little salt and ketchup made them the perfect side to accompany this colossal sandwich. You will need a to go box unless you are a really big eater or have a little mooch like Tony helping you eat it. I still needed a take home box after sharing some.
Our server was pleasant and efficient. If you ever get the chance you should definitely give the Edinburgh Diner a try.
5 stars for the Edinburgh Diner.
Until next time Bon appetit
ps.. We had a great ride and good fellowship.... oh, and ice cream. Don't forget...
Read moreVery country home time feel. I got the tenderloin which of course you have read and seen the pictures and previous reviews. It is absolutely huge! And is only $6.99. The Taste isn’t bad. And for one dollar you can get an additional bun and dressings for the sandwich to share with someone. Which we ended up doing since my husband didn’t like his food. They actually cut mine in half when they brought it to my table. My husband got hashbrowns, which were burnt. He also ordered the ribs. But be aware, they don’t advertise this, but they are beef ribs not pork ribs! And they boil them so they cook faster. Then slather sauce on afterwards. He said they were gross and very tough. I believe this place became very popular very fast just because of the tenderloin Publicity. and I believe the cooks in the back are struggling to keep up, & overwhelmed at times. It was very busy when we were there. I think the cooks are trying to find new ways for shortcuts, and that is when places like this start to get in trouble.Their menu is a little expansive for a small time diner. I hope they get it figured out by the next time I go. They also don’t have ANY of their sides listed. You have to try and remember and listen closely when the waitress runs through the list of sides very fast. They have daily specials also. Which is where my husband ordered those awful ribs. They also have all-you-can-eat chicken sometimes through out the week. For those...
