3 Gulls Creamery — Restaurant in Edisto Beach

We were completely taken aback today with our experience at this location. Unfortunately we witnessed an older man working here who took an order from a young white gentleman wearing no shirt who proceeded to pay and take a seat in the facility, the worker then noticed a young mixed gentleman enter without a shirt as well, however this young man did have a towel draped over both shoulders and covering his top half. The employee/owner made a point to shout across the very busy store to the young man and asked him to step outside without a shirt. The young man stepped outside and the individual he was with remained in line for an extended time up until she got to the register, at which point she motioned for him to step inside briefly and asked him a question- the employee/owner then made a point to say he had asked once and he needed to leave or he would call the police because it is SC state law to wear a shirt! The young lady asked if he had not seen the white young man he served and took money from and was currently sitting in the facility without a shirt to which he responded he must not have noticed. She asked if he would like her to go let the other young man know he needed to leave as well and he said he would take care of it and asked them both to leave the premises! This was blatantly obvious what was taking place, appalling that people still operate on this level and as the couple left without being served he let the young white man know it was fine to stay. If you are a person of color, for your own sake avoid this place, if you care perhaps you want to choose to support another...

We went twice on a recent trip to Edisto. Prices seemed on the high side, but it is a beach town , so that wasn’t a big surprise. Good ice cream, and a different young lady waited on us each time. Both were pleasant and cheerful. One thing that detracts from the shop, though, is little rules posted everywhere. It seems somewhat oppressive. Another issue with the policies there were the “up charges”. You couldn’t specify a particular type of cone without purchasing an extra scoop. In addition, if you wanted two scoops of different flavors you were charged extra. I’ve never seen that, anywhere. The impression overall is that the owner never heard the old adage that “the customer is always right”. In this case, the customer can take it or leave it. Being local, we’ve visited this shop many times since it opened and have had nothing but positive experiences. They rotate flavors in and always have new ones to try. Every one has been delicious. The girls working this summer were very pleasant and hardworking. Sometimes the line was out the door but they treated each customer with courtesy and respect. Sure, you could get ice cream cheaper at the grocery, but there’s something about getting it from a local parlor…especially when it’s hot outside and you need instant gratification! 3 Gulls is a huge upgrade over the musty old video store a few doors down that also happened to...
