Essl's Dugout — Restaurant in Egg Harbor Township

I have passed this place a million times as I have lived in this area all my life. Recently I have seen great reviews on Facebook, so I decided to try it. Wow. What a dump, that’s all I can say. Dirty. Unhappy customer faces. Single waitress working( named Linda )grumbling under her breath. Bad vibes. Wrong orders as experienced by myself and the party two tables away. For example I ordered the Messl burger which in its description includes fried onions on it. The burger hadn’t any on it - fine, but the kitchen had no carmelized onions in the back. The staff actually expected that we wait for them. Does anyone know how long that takes? What kitchen in its own right has no cooked onions on the flat top? So while the non existent onions are about to be sliced, my daughters food is already out. We do not eat until everyone is served. Common decency and table manners aside how cold do you think her creamed chipped beef would be? Other items that were ordered did not come out, just as well because we LEFT. The atmosphere and service was so overwhelmingly terrible that I cannot believe this place stays in business. Perhaps we aren’t “regulars” but we were treated like strangers that weren’t welcomed there. Who knows maybe they don’t need my business?But with actions and attitudes like this perhaps YOU should save yourself time, money and aggravation by not going there and trying The Breakfast Place in Somers Point instead.

I was lucky enough to find out about Essl's through the Atlantic County Takeout Facebook Group. We had to unexpectedly plan a funeral for my father in law and due to COVID we had to have the luncheon it at home and wanted to give our guests as safe of an experience as we could. I contacted them and can not say nice enough things about their business. Their customer service was awesome, I appreciated the patience over the phone, this wasn't exactly a party I was trying to plan and his suggestions were great. They did lunch boxes with a sandwich, a side and a dessert with cutlery in each box. It alleviated from guests all touching the same trays. I needed cold since it is so hot outside. Our guests raved about the sandwiches and the size of them! We did an appetizer spread inside for close family and it was beautifully done and exactly what I could have hoped for, tasted amazing! Went there 2 weeks ago, very good food. Decent price...thought I would try the Family Meals menu. I ordered online by Weds. night. To pick up the following Tuesday at 1pm. The waitress told me family meals change every week. Feeds about 4 people. I ordered 1 eggplant rotini family meal w ziti and 1 keto burrito bowl family meal. Total $20. Plus 3.00 Gratuity and tax. Imagine my shock when I got back to my car and noticed it was enough for 2 people total? $24? I walked back and the door said closed of course it’s a lunch place. I called when I got back to my office and left a voicemail. Asking if maybe I “was missing some boxes of food.”? CAll me and I am not satisfied. Well it’s the next evening and of course no call back. I would like my cc refunded. I fed my dad and my husband and I had to have a peanut butter sandwich. For $24?
