I've been meaning to try Johnnie's, a Rt66 staple, for several years now. I finally had the chance to stop in and see for myself if it lives up to everything I've read and seen in Rt66 travel guide and YouTube videos. I'm happy to say that it isn't hype, it's just that good. Johnnie's has been open since 1946, and is my favorite kind of restaurant. It has a great short order menu, and the service was outstanding. The employees were friendly, and even though there was a good lunch crowd, they were also very attentive. I ordered an original Oklahoma Onion Burger with cheese, a Coney with chili and slaw, a half order of shoe string fries, and a slice of Coconut cream pie. The burger was just the right blend of bitter and sweet from the grilled onion. The fries were perfect and hand cut. The coney was an actual red Coney (if you know, you know) and the chili and slaw were both house made. The pie is also house made and they have a very large desert menu. The other thing I cant emphasize enough is the value. I could only eat about half of each of my items thanks to generous portions. My entire meal cost less than a single hamburger at a trendy 'burger joint'. If you are a fan of history and want to experience a true old fashioned meal,...
Read moreHello Oklahoma! I am on a Highway 66 road trip. This happened on Tuesday, October 15th, I went to lunch at Johnnie's Hamburgers & Coneys. Although, the food was delicious, the service left a horrible taste in my mouth. Johnnie's was the number one recommended restaurant on my list. I was excited about having a famous onion burger. During my stop, a young couple walked in, sat down at the bar. Then what I thought to be the person in charge, started yelling and cussing these two kids out. The boy more, than the girl. I wanted to call the police but I left my phone in the car. With that being said, if you are the person in charge, you are a disgrace. You should be ashamed of yourself, I can't imagine why people in El Reno, Oklahoma would recommend a restaurant ran by you. Now after having this experience and taking some time to think about it, the food is really not that good to ever want to come back. I would rather go to Taco Bell and know what I am going to get than to be subjected to seeing what I did. To the person that owns/manages, train your employees. I hope for your sake that you didn't lose too many customers because of an employee. Why didn't anyone stop her? Poor kids. Lady you ruined a great restaurant...
Read moreDecent onion burgers, but it's not my first choice in El Reno. We visited on a Sunday as the 'other' place was closed. Our third visit, so this is not a review based on one visit. On the plus side the place is spacious, the 'other' place requires a shoe horn to get in the door most days, so if you have kids Johnnie's might be a better choice. The place is easy on/off parking on the corner, and it's brightly lit with tvs, lots of large tables, and a long diner counter if you prefer more traditional seating. On the negative side the burgers trend a bit on the bland side, over mashed, and soggy. However, They still get the job done, relatively tasty, but still rather dissapointing for a place that specializes in onion burgers. The staff is efficient and friendly, but seemed rather burned out, as we sat at the counter we listened to conversations the entire meal complaining about this and that with the job. Would I go back again, maybe. It's still worth a try to satisfy your onion burger craving, especially If you don't like being crammed into a sardine can at the 'other' place. Unfortunately it won't be my first choice, but I'll give them another try in the future to see if things...
