STAY AWAY AT ALL COST! This place is a tiny little hole in the wall diner whose owner is the cook with a HUGE terrible attitude if you, the customer, don't like something. Thats not the way to run a diner. I ordered a BOWL of grits ($3.50) with CHEDDAR cheese. They delivered a small bowl (the size used for condiments and side dishes) of grits. I specifically had a conversation with the server to ensure the cheese would be cheddar and she assured me it would. They served a shredded MIXED cheese of cheddar and who knows what white cheese. I had already stirred in the cheese before taking the picture, but you can clearly see some white cheese on the spoon handle. I decided to inquire about the cheese and small bowl size and that's when it all hit the fan. I asked the server to take it back and remove it from my order. She said "I can't take it back." When I told her that I would not pay for it, she went to the cook and said, "Mama, she said she's not going to pay for the grits." Next thing I know, a woman (the cook) comes from behin, swoops by the table, snatches up the grits AND MY WATER! and keeps briskly walking to the other end of the restaurant. On her way back, I confronted her about taking my water and all hell broke loose with her lecturing me. When I told her she didn't need to have such an attitude, her response was that I had an attitude from the moment I walked in! Then she just continued to loudly fuss at me. I was done being berated and treated like dirt just for wanting to return one item. I left. BUT, one of the points she MADE SURE to state, was that tax was included in the prices already on their menu. Then, when the other person who was dining with me left, his order was $10.75 on the menu, which was also supposed to include his coffee and taxes. They charged him $13.00! Whatever. Not only was his food "just okay", not up to "good", they yell at their customers and then overcharge them terribly. UNBELIEVABL! Leave this place to the local yocals. YOU CAN'T SAY YOU...
Read moreAfter browsing through several online reviews of various local diners in the Elkton to Harrisonburg area, we opted to give Elkton's 'Grub & Gab Diner' a visit. This decision resulted in a wonderful dining experience.
The 'Grub & Gab Diner' gives you a small hometown vibe where everybody knows everybody from the moment you enter the quaint little diner with seating for approximately 30-35 customers (estimated). We were promptly greeted and told to have a seat wherever we'd like and almost immediately approached for our drink order. Although I was disappointed to learn they serve pepsi products, I opted for the unsweetened tea which was made in house and very good. I also ordered the Dilly Burger with french fries, which were made to order. As you can see in the photos, I received a generous portion of crinkle cut fries to accompany the delicious Dilly Burger. The pepper jack cheese, cayenne pepper, & jalapeno peppers give this burger a bit of a kick while managing to not overpower the flavor of the beef and other toppings. It was simply an unexpected delight and while I really wanted another, after finishing it and the fries I knew I didn't have room for a second burger. However I did order a slice of Coconut Pie which was a nice way to wrap up this meal.
I wish there was a clone of Elkton's 'Grub & Gab Diner' in my hometown because I would be a regular customer. You should give them a try if you find...
Read moreI'm a big fan of local diners and diner food in general. From my understanding, this place has recently reopened after closing. The location is rather good and it's just up the street from two other diners, C&S and from Terri's, both of which are excellent, especially the latter.
The decor is good, and classic for a diner. The service was prompt and prices good. The food however, was not the best and miles away from Terri's in every way. The cook did not know what a sunny side up eggs were, for instance, so they came out over easy. That was fine, as I enjoy a fried egg as long as the yolk is runny. The biscuits were clearly either canned or low-quality frozen, which to me is not acceptable for a place specializing in breakfast. The chipped beef gravy was pre-made from a pouch and microwaved, gloppy, and translucent, not creamy at all. The ponhaus and the homefries were both rather good, though more crisp on each would have been appreciated.
Man, I really wanted to like this place, and I hate giving it a poor review after taking the time to add this place, their hours, and photos to Google maps. Maybe they're better for lunch or maybe it was an off day. I really hope they get some things sorted out here and stick...
