Petra Falafel II — Restaurant in Elmhurst

Stopped by after first seeing it about a week ago. Interior is bright and cozy. Went on a Tuesday at lunch time and there was only one other person there waiting. The guys working there are actually from Jordan and were happy to talk about where they came from, and where that is relative to Petra. Really nice guys and that added to the authenticity.

I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap, and the cashier (who also ended up being the cook for my shawarma) immediately told me it would be about 10 minutes. While that may be a problem for some, it was because they don't have a pile of cooked meat laying around getting dried out - he grilled the shawarma fresh and it made a difference in the sandwich. If you're in a hurry, though, it might be best to order ahead.

The shawarma wrap was delicious. Just the right balance of chicken, garlic sauce and the other ingredients. Got mine without pickles because I hate pickles, so I can't speak to how that would go, but I expect still balanced well with the other ingredients. I wasn't really there for a health food lunch, but it was just enough sauce for flavor and the other ingredients made it healthier than almost anything else I'd eat for lunch. As a final nice touch, even the wrap had grill marks on the outside. You could taste the grilled flavor in every bite!

I thought it was just a tiny bit pricier that what I'd like for the size of the wrap, but the quality made up for that and I feel like I got a good value and good food from good people. Will happily visit again to expand my experiences...

If you like falafel, Petra is comparable, closer to my home than Roti, enroute to groceries. Tonight my family wanted McDonald’s before a busy night ahead. I didn’t. I needed to run to Jewel so it was the perfect time to try out Petra Falafel. I got the falafel plate and added the Kalamata olive sauce and tahini. I combined everything and it was delicious. The staff was friendly and answered all my questions. The lighting is bright so maybe it’s not best for a date night but while I was there, multiple take out orders came through, a catering order, online order, and a kid eating too. Our family couldn’t wait to try this place out, and it did not disappoint! We ordered our dinner to-go, and we came home and discovered we were missing sandwich from our order. Called the store, and they said they tried to chase after me with the sandwich in the parking lot. He immediately offered to drive it to our house! We said it was no problem to come pick it up. Sent the husband, and he came back with a complimentary baklava. We’re impressed with the effort, but most importantly the flavor and food! (We ordered a few shawarma sandwiches and platters.)
