The reputation is deserved. After a mediocre dinner the night before, my top tier chums and I needed a comeback for breakfast. I noticed this highly rated establishment not too far from our Airbnb, and that was that. Cafe Seventy Two is on a pretty busy thoroughfare and easy to spot. We stopped by shortly after they opened (that was also a consideration - we looked at a few places in Lambertville but we're unapologetic early birds so if you're not opening your restaurant before 9AM dot dot dot), secured both a parking spot right by the entrance and a table inside quickly. They did have a pleasant looking outdoor area in front too, but the siren song of air conditioning was too strong on this particular morning.
I saw no reason to get cute, and went with my favorite breakfast entrée, the classic Eggs Benedict. Delicious and hit the spot in a way that only happens if you were a bit naughty the prior day with a few birthday cocktails. There was honestly nothing that truly set this apart from the myriad of Benedicts on brunch menus throughout the lands, but it didn't have to be particularly complicated - it was dictionary definition perfection. The home fries that accompanied the dish were excellent as well. At $13, the price point is competitive for the area (especially taking into consideration the Delaware River tourist traps just to the north).
We also continued our breakfast tradition and strategically ordered something sweet to share. This time we selected an option from the specials menu, the lemon ricotta donut holes, which I believe came with a blueberry compote or close to it. Absolutely awesome. Optics-wise we were initially a little confused (I think we were all expecting something more yellow befitting the lemon designation), but once we bit into the donuts, everything made sense. I imagine the key to this item is not overcooking/frying (however donuts are magically prepared for us), and these definitely were not. The texture was excellent, and the compote paired perfectly.
Unsurprisingly, the service was fantastic as well. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and everything we ordered came out in a timely fashion. We weren't in a rush, but we were still in and out of there pretty quickly. It was starting to fill up a bit as we left, so we may have also been the beneficiaries of an early mealtime.
If you can't wait an extra hour or two to feast on the weekend (or even if you can), this is a...
Read moreThis place only deserves 1 star because the food was great. I am an 18 year old black girl and I went to Café 72 to celebrate my birthday today with a group of my friends. My waitress was Gina & the only way we knew that was because her name was on the check. She did not introduce herself to us & did not make us feel welcomed. She did not check up on us at all while we were eating. When she came to give us napkins she just just threw them on the table like she didn't care. She was gone for so long that another employee had to clear our table and ask us if our meals were good as we waited for our checks. No where on the checks does it say that tipping is an obligation or gives us a specific amount to tip like how other restaurants do. By the way, customers are not required by law to tip waiters. With that being said I did not feel as though Gina worked hard to please her customers & therefore did not DESERVE a tip from me. After paying our bills we stepped outside and decided to take pictures. The manager came outside and asked if we forgot to tip our waitress. I let him know then and there that I was not satisfied with our service so we did not leave a tip. We were then told that she would not be receiving the entire tip because they divide the tips among all of them. As a result we gave a $6 tip & Gina and another waitress came out the restaurant yelling at us telling us that we "should be ashamed of ourselves" & that they "know each and everyone of our faces & are never allowed to come here" & to "never come back". The manager insulted us by saying we were "scrapping for money to pay". Little does he know we will be attending the finest institutions in the nation: Columbia University, Princeton University, & UPENN. On the other hand, the OWNER was very calm and respectful. She told us to disregard what her employees were saying to us. She told us that we are welcome anytime but would like us to tip...
Read moreFirst time in Ewing NJ, or West Trenton! I decided to try this place , looked like a decent place for the area. Not that the area was bad, but it wasn’t great or anything special. I was greeted nicely. However they gave me an issue when they told me I had to pay for a to go box and utensils. I have worked in restaurants before. And no matter the financial issues, you never make your customers pay for to go boxes. That’s all included in the service provided! Not to mention the French fries were 8 dollars. That’s absolutely insane. The to go box was a dollar. If restaurants gives you plastic bags or boxes or utensils, for to go, you can’t charge, you can’t carry your food in your hands. It’s a bad business practice. And the food was over priced. I said would they be able to not charge me for the bid as I have never been to the area let alone that restaurant! The guy at the register said he would have to ask. Than he said okay and I put in my card. I than see the bill was $9.60 ! Mind you only for French fries. And I said isn’t the Fries , $8.00 ? He said yeah but with the biodegradable to go box. I than said , didn’t you just tell me I didn’t have to pay?! They than called the Manager over, who wrote me off and didn’t even bother to acknowledge me and said to her staff member right in front of me that that’s been our policy for a year now! Mind you she appeared to be maybe 20 years old or still in high school! She has no sense of work ethic or how to engage customers with issues. I will not be going back or recommending this place ever! It amazes me that people will pay a million dollars for low quality food because the restaurant has a small ascetic! Mind you the area around isn’t worth $8.00 for French fries! It’s French fries!...
