First off I must mention that I love the German culture and cuisine. So when I saw a German bread bakery my hopes were high. After several visits I am still disappointed.
So there are several good things found here. First off the breads are very good. Sadly they sell out very quickly. I had a loaf of the monastery bread which was dark and chewy and went very well with some Meggle butter or some meat and cheese. So come here early to get good bread.
They also offer some authentic German items such as Dallmayr coffee, Meggle Alpenbutter, Red Rötkal and locally made würst.
With such a selection you would expect a very German ambience. You will not find that here.
Your first impression upon arriving is a run down building overgrown with weeds. All the signage looks like it was written years ago. When you walk in don't expect to see Germans. When I visit a German bakery I want to see the Germans and talk German! I'm not sure if they even understand English well. Despite my several visits and even asking to see Bernhardt, I have never seen anyone German.
The whole place seems to be run by a Spanish family. That's all I have ever seen. When I buy things or check out they seem to have no clue about any of the pastries or the bread. They appeared as if they did not want to be there and could care less if I lived or died. Talk about a lack of personality. This is a big turn off. I even said hi and was greeted with silence. If they don't understand me it doesn't make sense to work in service.
This family also made the hot and cold sandwiches. Although they are generous with meat and cheese on the sandwiches they are not prepared by a German or even with a German standing near by. I will not order another sandwich from here.
The pastries are hit or miss on yumminess. The Heidesand was good but the blueberry küchen was a disappointment.
So in summary don't go out of your way to come here unless you are desperate for some good bread or some knockwürst. There is a French bakery just up the rode that is actually run by French and carries strong French ambiance. I plan to visit this place...
Read moreAs an Austrian living in Atlanta for the past 18 years, homesickness hits me like a rogue schnitzel—especially after a trip back home or a visit from family. But then I found Bernhard’s, and suddenly the world felt a little less cruel and a lot more delicious.
This place is pure joy. A glorious little slice of Germany and Austria hidden in the South, with everything from hearty soups and sausages to freshly baked bread and pastries that taste like they came straight out of Oma’s kitchen. Honestly, if my therapist ever goes on vacation, I’ll just come here instead. Nothing says “emotional healing” like biting into a perfectly flaky Topfengolatsche.
The only downside? No place to sit. No cozy corner, no sunny outdoor table, not even a bench to clutch my Bratwurst sandwich in peace. Just give me a couple of high tables outside, Bernhard—something to lean on like we do at the Stehimbiss back home, while debating which pastry to devour next.
I’ll definitely be back (probably embarrassingly often), especially in hopes of scoring those elusive German pretzel sticks that were sadly sold out during my last visit. Until then, danke for bringing a little piece of home to Atlanta—and for helping me power through homesick days, one...
Read moreJust stopped by this super cute bakery! It’s adorable and I love that they have a lot of German products. I only gave 4/5 stars because it would’ve been amazing to have more vegan friendly products. I personally was disappointed that the frozen “make at home” soups contained chicken stock, but that’s just me.
EDITED: Not sure why there was butt hurt on my review. It’s just one person’s opinion. Plus, all I mentioned is that it would’ve been nice to have the frozen veggie soups being made with veggie stock, since with chicken stock, it isn’t even vegetarian. Berlin is one of the most vegan friendly cities in the world and I was hoping maybe there may have been something within the store, like dairy free Ritter Sport (which I’ve found here in the US before.) There were other varieties, which is great too! Referring my review to “wanting legos from Home Depot” was totally unnecessary. I didn’t intend for this establishment to feel any sort of disappointment from my review. In fact, the day of my visit, I bought a packet of “Sternchen” soup, a brötchen, and a package of Manner (since the Neapolitaner variety are vegan friendly) to show some...
