Like a really watered down Costco with no hot dogs. Membership is about $50 or $55 unless on promotion for first time people.
Plusses: No other big box store is nearby Has lunch snack items for kids lunches for, sometimes, lower than Costco in price Price of chicken (whole) is routinely lower than almost every other place. Chicken thighs and legs are higher than Walmart, but there is no Walmart nearby. Baking mixes etc. (e.g., cornbread mix, brownie mix, shortening) are lower than other places and they have some brand name items but the flour is way more expensive and in smaller bags. Ample parking (free) Propane is cheaper than elsewhere, however, you need to be there before 7:30pm and sometimes they have run out. Lowest price for empanada pastry (Goya brand) but good luck finding it. I had to order it online as I couldn't find it in store. Produce is higher than Aldi, Lidl, and sometimes other places. Sells Puerto Rican pan sabao Good selection of chocolate and candy, a bit cheaper in the larger sizes than other stores, but no house brand ones. Clothing is a reasonable price.
Price for a 3lbs (pre-cooked weight) chicken is $4.99, so that is OK.
Customer service has always been helpful.
Minuses: I really hate the coupon clipping either on paper or digital. Paper ones are at the entrance. Just give me the price like Costco and call it a day. This really detracts from my shopping here. I don't have time for that as a working individual.
The BOGO Free (buy one get one free) items online are deceiving. I bought rainbow bagels and the listing online said BOGO. After I picked up my order, I realized I was missing the second bag of bagels. I went back and the customer service clerk said, "No, you get the bagels for free if you pay for 2lbs (908g) or cream cheese. This was NOT CLEAR at all on the online shopping experience. To show me, she clicked three times through different menus. Again, NOT CLEAR. The cream cheese was more than double the price of Aldi's regular price anyway, so all told, not a good deal, and NO FREE BAGELs.
Some items online are not in store (e.g., couldn't find the washer fluid or oil (can't remember which) that it said was in store and employees couldn't either).
Less selection than Costco but more than Walmart for food items.
Given the negatives, the only reason I go is because of the location and when I need propane. They are understaffed in the tire shop so it may take a while to get service but the employees are apologetic and helpful.
I totally don't trust them with the reoccurring membership charge to your credit card if they can't do the basic stuff right so don't accept that if you get a membership.
Given the negatives of the coupon nonsense (also why I seldom shop at Harris Teeter and Safeway) and the deceptive BOGO deals online, it isn't...
Read moreI have a membership here and at one of BJ’s competitors. My BJ’s membership is up next month and I won’t be renewing it. Why? Recently, BJ’s has begun allowing ultra aggressive sales tactics specifically for cell phone service and home solar panel sales. By aggressive, I mean a BJ’s employee or authorized contractor approaches and corners unaware customers as they go about their usual shopping within the store. These “salespeople” engage/corner the customer in a scripted sales pitch not unlike a door-to-door salesperson. Today, I was approached by both of these “salespeople” within two minutes of one another and it was genuinely uncomfortable. At least one of the salespeople in question corners me every time I go to this BJ’s location going back several months. As someone who really doesn’t want to spend any more time in a warehouse club than I have to and finds these sales tactics a terrible abuse of basic trust in the retail experience, I’m out. (Mind you, this is much different than the booth salespeople who solicit but don’t leave their booths to do so at Costco. I can just walk around those folks.)
Additionally, this location is small with a similarly proportionate selection of goods and staff compared to the competition. (You really don’t sell Coke Zero?) Also, one has to digitally clip and use coupons to buy certain items at the lowest price — competitors don’t make customers do that. We do get a very convenient location at this specific BJ’s that is somewhat less crowded than competitors and that’s really the only reason we had kept both memberships. It’s closer to grocery store timing than a half-day outing. But after being accosted within 5 minutes of being in the store today, I’ll deal with the grocery store in between the big outings. BJ’s Corporate, if you’re listening, you should be aiming to make customers feel more comfortable upon entering your...
Read moreI ordered by tires early December and made an appointment. The Funds were deducted. The tires were confirmed. From that point on there's no communication whatsoever from BJ's.
I came to my appointment. I drove over 40 miles and scheduled off work to get there! There's no one doing any work in the bay. There's just one person working at the front desk and he's swamped. I tell him I'm here for my appointment at 9:30. He tells me I can't possibly have an appointment because the lady behind me has the 9:30 appointment.
I tell him I placed an order and I haven't heard anything regarding. I ask where are the tires I paid for. He tells me they don't have them after looking and that the computer system lies. I go so you took the money...but I don't have an appointment, you don't have my tires, and I'm hearing about this now?
I ask who do I have to speak to about getting a refund. So I walk all the way across the BJ's and go inside and to the Front Desk. The manager looks in their inventory and he tells me there's tires in stock and he walks back with me. The man tells him they're old tires. They don't have my tires. Finally they process a refund. (They don't even have a printer in the tire center for the receipt! The manager has to walk to the customer service center to give me my receipt.)
If you're interested why I didn't bother to call? Have you ever tried calling BJ's Tires for anything? They never pick up any call. I tried multiple times in the past and that phone will ring for over thirty minutes easy.
This is impressively bad service.
TDLR: Over two weeks ago I booked an appointment to get the tires I ordered placed on my vehicle. BJ's wasted my time and leave by not having the tires I ordered in stock and not communicating they couldn't keep my...
