Thirty years ago, I strolled into Hong Kong Kitchen in FarmVille, VA, and innocently ordered the sweet and sour chicken. What I didn’t realize is that I was about to imprint a core memory so strong that Pixar could make a whole sequel about it.
That chicken was crispy enough to break through the sound barrier, the sauce was sweeter than my first crush, and together they formed a flavor combo that has lived rent free in my head for three decades. Rent free! Not even a token for utilities.
I’ve changed jobs, raised kids, survived dial-up internet, and somehow aged 30 years, but my taste buds are still waiting at the door of Hong Kong Kitchen like a loyal golden retriever, hoping to relive that first bite.
Beware: the sweet and sour chicken here doesn’t just stick to your ribs… it sticks...
Read moreI am giving a 2-star rating only due to the restaurant not having a website besides FB and my initial food experience with them. Also, why don’t they have an up to date menu and online ordering like Golden Palace a mile down road from them? So much more convenient!
The only item I have ordered here is the Bone In BBQ spare ribs. They were cooked well and not burnt leathery meat like other places. My only problem is that they were bland, plain, No Chinese flavor! What’s up with that? They were basic ribs cooked well, just like I can do at home- no Chinese flavor even after slathering ten packages of Duck Sauce over them.
Aside from those two things, I would be willing to try them again if those things...
