A Culinary Experience Overshadowed by Auditory Mayhem

As I stepped into the elegant ambiance of Gigi's Southern Table on 11/24/23 for a 3pm reservation, I was greeted by a symphony of scents and sights that promised an evening of culinary delight. The décor was tasteful, the lighting intimate, and the air buzzed with the anticipation of a memorable dining experience. However, as I settled into my seat, my senses were abruptly assaulted by a cacophony of sound, a relentless barrage of rock music emanating from the kitchen.

The music, a jarring blend of heavy beats and distorted guitars, reverberated through the dining room, rendering conversation nearly impossible. It was as if the kitchen staff had mistaken the restaurant for a rock concert venue, their enthusiasm for music eclipsing their concern for the dining experience of their patrons.

Despite the unwelcome soundtrack, I remained hopeful, determined to let the food be the star of the show. Unfortunately, my optimism was soon misplaced. The dishes, while visually appealing, failed to deliver on taste. The flavors were bland and uninspired, as if the kitchen staff's musical passion had drained away their culinary creativity.

In an attempt to salvage what was left of our evening, my dining companion and I requested a table away from the kitchen's auditory assault. Our server, Mary, a beacon of grace amidst the chaos, graciously accommodated our request, relocating us to a quieter corner of the restaurant.

Mary was an absolute gem, the sole redeeming factor of our otherwise disappointing experience. Her attentiveness, knowledge of the menu, and genuine warmth were a welcome respite from the culinary cacophony. She answered our questions patiently, made recommendations with enthusiasm, and ensured our glasses were never empty.

Despite Mary's valiant efforts, the relentless music and underwhelming cuisine left an indelible mark on our evening. Gigi's Southern Table had the potential to be a culinary haven, but its misguided attempt to inject a rock-and-roll spirit into the dining experience resulted in a jarring dissonance that overshadowed the food and ambiance.

I would urge the restaurant's management to reconsider their musical approach. While a touch of background music can enhance the dining experience, a full-blown rock concert in the kitchen is an unwelcome addition to a fine dining establishment. The cooks, I imagine, would take more pride in delivering a great guest experience by turning down the music and focusing on their culinary craft.

As for Mary, she deserves a standing ovation for her professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. She is an asset to Gigi's Southern Table, a shining star amidst a culinary storm and the only reason I opted for a 2 star...

If the food is going to be as expensive as it is, it needs to be cooked and seasoned better.

I had previously reviewed Gigis 2 years ago and gave them 5 stars. I'll leave my previous review below because honestly at the time that I left it, their food was delicious.

We hadn't been to Gigis for at least a year or so but we went today and Im actually not sure when or if we will go back again. I will start by saying our waiter was very friendly and enthusiastic. Also the fried green tomato bruschetta was very good and I enjoyed my spicy margarita. Otherwise I wasjustnpt impressed.. When we were sat down we were given our menus and an extra paper with feature meals on it. My wife ordered the steak feature from this menu which featured a ribeye with brown sugar butter. I ordered the bayou blackened steak. The waiter came back to say that the ribeye was not being served today? She changed her ordered to the NY strip. When the food came out it looked good except that I got asparagus instead of charred green beans, not that big of a deal I like asparagus also. The roasted red potatoes as always were delicious. My steak while cooked well was not seasoned very well. Not really sure why its called a bayou blackened steak. My wife ordered her steak medium and im not sure you could even call what she got rare. We let the waiter know and he took it back to be cooked longer. He was very nice about it and very apologetic. When it was regrilled the little bit of seasoning that was on it was cooked off and it still wasn't medium. I'd say it was rare/ medium rare in the center. At this point we were over it so we said it was fine and got a box to go. Figure we can try to season it better and give it a sear in a skillet at home since we paid over $40 for it. We were really looking forward to the delicious food we had at Gigis and were so disappointed we didn't get it. I really don't know if its worth going back unless we only order the fried green tomato bruschetta and some roast red potatoes. I don't recommend any of the steaks unless they make some improvements. Not worth the money.

My wife and I have gone here twice now and we really enjoyed it both times. The servers are very friendly and we love the cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend the fried green tomatoes as a starter, it was our favorite! My wife got the ribeye and it was cooked very nicely and seasoned well and definitely try the roasted red potatoes with it! My mahi mahi tacos and fries were also...

We chose Gigi's after a review of their menu. It was original and not run of the mill. We had a little rocky start. It seemed that with live music on a Wednesday night the "five" staff at the hostess stand were trying to seat everyone in the bar area. When asked if we would like a high top (motioned to bar area) or a low top (motions to dining room), we said low. However, he instructed a female hostess to seat us at a low top in the bar. It quickly turned a nice quiet dinner for a couple into a frustrated conversation because we couldn't hear one another. We asked and were relocated to the dining room. There were only 2 tables at that time seated in the dining room. The main dinning room tries to have the same funky atmosphere yet it could use a refresh. Just a fresh coat of paint would be great, as the booths are very dirty where painted below. But it is still a wonderful room with the same eclectic vibe and huge comfy chairs. Our wait staff were Sabrina and Braden who were friendly, attentive, and professional. The service was EXCELLENT. The Chipotle Deviled Eggs were great. The Chipotle was subtle not overpowering. The sirloin meal was the star of the show! There is no bland food at Gigi's. The seasoning on the sirloin was on point and the meat was tender and juicy. I can not stress enough how flavorful the meat, potatoes, and beans all were. It is a rare occurrence, that as much attention is given to the sides as to the meat, but Gigi's have perfected every item. For us dessert was disappointing. They called it Mississippi Mud Pie but there was no coffee flavor or coffee ice cream at all which should be in true Mud Pie. There was no cookie crust either. Their version is more of a standard triple chocolate dessert with a brownie base, chocolate mousse, and chocolate shavings, dizzled with more chocolate. Overall we highly recommend Gigi's for ambiance, quality of food, price,...

I liked the atmosphere here, but the food was just not good. Came here on Saturday an 8:30 reservation through OpenTable. Food took 45 min to come out from sitting. Biscuits (7/10): really liked these. Soft, warm and not dry. And the butter went really well with them as well. Hard to mess up biscuits. But, at most other restaurants, you typically get the bread for free. So, I wish they were free. Also, these took awhile to come out (~20 minutes), apps/bread should be faster. Cajun chicken pasta *double chicken* (5/10): This dish came out cold. The pasta was very much over cooked. And, overall, I found this dish bland. Chicken was just average, really nothing special. I actually found the chicken to be on the drier side. Also, there wasn’t really that much pasta. It was a very shallow dish. Definitely would’ve expected more for the price. Southern shrimp carbonara (3/10): To be honest, I found this dish just disappointing. The sauce was very cheesy, almost like they just melted a block of cheese on top. I liked the Olive Garden carbonara a lot better. I found the andouille sausage to be very lacking. Tasted bad. I’m a big fan of an andouille sausage too. Overall, not a fan. To summarize, I really didn’t like this restaurant too much. Service and food lacked. Atmosphere was definitely very cool though. Won’t be coming back and would not recommend since there are many better restaurants in state college.
