Como's — Restaurant in Ferndale

My husband and I never got to dine here when the parking is horrible. I made a right onto 9 Mile Road off of Woodward Ave and upon seeing a sign close by the restaurant that says no left turn allowed was unexpected and an inconvenience. So then I had to drive past the restaurant and wait at the intersection (to turn left) across from the Ferndale library. There was an auto repair shop with a dirt road that doesn’t connect to the restaurant’s car park. It was frustrating trying to figure out where to park when I was farther away from the restaurant now. I had to turn around and drive back to the same intersection and finally I was able to turn right and into the restaurant’s parking. But that didn’t matter when I saw the restaurant has metered parking. I thought all this aggravation was not worth the time and effort it took to find a parking spot and we’re expected to pay for metered parking too!? I needed to leave, but yet another inconvenience occurred because the parking is diagonal and so crowded and the ginnel was narrow. I was sick of all this aggravation! When trying to drive out of the cramped parking I weren’t sure which way to turn my car so I could finally get away from this place. My husband and I the customers were not expecting metered parking in Ferndale that is 75 cents per hour. Royal Oak parking garages are free for the first two hours. We shouldn’t have to be this inconvenienced by how the restaurant parking was designed and then expected to pay for Ferndale’s metered parking has changed to digital and the payment is set up for debit card and/or credit card only. No where is a sign explaining how to pay for the metered parking. I found out a few months back through a Google search that you have to download the Sentry app in order to be able to pay for metered parking. In Ferndale all the digital parking spots have a short metal pole and that’s what this restaurant’s car park has. When you see the short pole it looks strange, like what is that thing? I knew what it was. We didn’t know this restaurant had metered parking. We felt like why should we have to pay for metered parking at this restaurant when Royal Oak’s parking garages have free parking for the first two hours? We’re not keen about the restaurant’s extra cost of $3.00 for their gluten free pizza crust. So we gave it a miss. It’s doesn’t seem worth the time and effort it takes to find a place to park. On March 25, my husbands birthday there was domestic situation in Madison Heights that had a heavy police presence and SWAT team officers were on scene. All that caused the traffic on west 696 freeway to be at a standstill and occasionally moving. What normally takes me 10 minutes to drive took 1 hour to drive. We were stuck on the freeway in traffic for 1 hour and now it was 4:30 PM our reservation time. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The decor was tasteful, and the lighting was just right, creating a cozy and romantic ambiance. The restaurant was rumbling with activity, but the noise level was not overwhelming, allowing me to enjoy my meal and conversations with my friends.

As we perused the menu, we decided to start with the Caesar salad and fried ravioli. The Caesar salad was nothing short of fantastic. The lettuce was crisp, and the dressing had just the right amount of tanginess, making it the perfect starter to our meal.

The fried ravioli was another standout dish. The ravioli had a crunchy exterior and a warm and gooey center that melted in our mouths. The dish was served with a side of marinara sauce, which was the perfect complement to the savory ravioli.

For our main course, we decided to go with the pizza, which we had heard so much about. We opted for three pizzas, pepperoni, grilled onions, mushroom pizza, a margarita pizza, and pepperoni pizza which was a perfect combination of spicy and earthy flavors. The crust was crispy, and the toppings were fresh and generously portioned. We also appreciated that the pizza was not overly greasy, making it a healthier option than some of the other pizzas we have had in the past.

Throughout our meal, the service was impeccable. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, answering all of our questions and making recommendations based on our preferences. She also ensured that our drinks were always full and that our food was served promptly, without being too rushed.

In addition to the food, the drinks menu at Como's is also quite impressive. They offer a wide range of wines, beers, and cocktails that pair perfectly with their Italian dishes. We decided to try the house-made maple smoked old fashioned, which was an excellent and sweet cocktail, a change from an original old fashioned. It was the perfect accompaniment to our meal and added to the overall experience.

One thing that stood out to us about the service was the attentiveness of the staff. They were always ready to provide us with extra napkins, water refills, and anything else we needed to make our dining experience more enjoyable. We appreciated this level of service and felt well taken care of throughout our visit.

Overall, our experience at Como's restaurant was a delightful one. The food was fresh and delicious, the service was top-notch, and the atmosphere was inviting and cozy. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an excellent Italian dining experience in Ferndale. We give it an 8/10 and look forward to...

Como’s is a pretty well known staple for a multitude of different reasons, good and bad. Going all the way back to 1955 when it opened its doors and became Ferndale’s first ever pizzeria. The restaurant was sold to the current management in 2018, however prior to that, Como’s reputation was at risk. Poor management being the base of it all, many people found that the Como’s they were seeing is not the Como’s they’ve come to know and love. This was my 3rd ever visit, let’s get into it.

We were sat immediately on the iconic outdoor patio. You’re basically on top of the Woodward & 9 Mile intersection right in the heart of the downtown area. It’s basically a people watcher’s heaven. My buddy ordered the frozen Piña Colada which was huge, and I had the Old Fashioned. I’ll be blunt, an “Old Fashioned” in a plastic cup, straws, and multiple ice cubes… it’s a big no for me. The Pomegranate Gimlet made up for that though.

For our Appetizer we decided on the Warm Crab Dip which comes in a breadbowl with lump crab, mixed with chedder and cream cheese. I definitely like the concept. The Crab Dip itself was great! The bread was good but a little on the dry side. Before our Pizza we decided to balance out the carbs with a Greek Salad. The salad comes with their homemade Italian dressing which I wasn’t sure about at first. As you can probably see, it’s not your typical Italian dressing, it has a sweeter flavor and paired perfectly with the salad. The produce was fresh and you can tell they wash their lettuce well before serving.

Okay, it’s time for the star of the show, the Pizza. I came here years ago, unsure if this was before or after the change in ownership, but the pizza I ordered was very bland and basic. To say the least, I was skeptical. We ordered the Joshua J Pizza which has Pepperoni, Jalapeño, & Hot Honey. This pizza was absolutely outstanding!! If you’re not getting extra sauce for your pizza here you’re missing out. The sauce was thick, flavorful, and with a nice sweetness. Not super acidic so no tums needed! The crust was perfectly charred and crunchy. So glad to see that they really know what they are doing when it comes to their pizza.

The best part of the meal surprisingly wasn’t the pizza, but it was our absolutely amazing server, Max. She makes you feel so welcome, and she really allowed us to take control of our dining experience. I’m definitely the type where I like to take my time, order the appetizer, finish, and then order my entree. She remained attentive while giving us all the time we needed without feeling rushed whatsoever. If you’re lucky enough to have Max as your waitress, you will have a good experience.
