I'll start with the bad about this place and then end it on a good note.
The service is hit-and-miss but overall I would rate it poor. We have been here a number of times and usually go on Sundays with a party of four. It is not uncommon for us to wait up to an hour for our food to arrive, after we place our order. I understand that things happen and sometimes restaurants get slammed with customers, etc. I get it. But the slow service here is just too frequent. It's unacceptable. The last time we were here, we waited an hour after we ordered and then we finally just got fed up, and left. Even the customer's sitting at the table next to us said to me, "I thought it was just us they were slow with". I mentioned the poor service to the server before we left, and she just did the blame game and blamed the cooks in the back, and didn't appear genuinely apologetic. Frankly, I don't want to hear who's "fault" it is. To me, it's everyone's fault, including the server/s. Poor team work and poor managing. We are to the point now where we likely won't come back to this place, which is a shame because the food and atmosphere are great, which leads me to the good...
We like to come here after Church on Sunday's because the food is really good. Their deep fried mushrooms are great and could be a meal in itself. I love 'em as does my mother-in-law! After a meal here, we never leave hungry or feeling dissatisfied with the food. That is saying something because my wife and in-laws are some of the pickiest eaters I know. The prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes, so one can't complain, especially considering the inflation we've been seeing at restaurants the past 1+ years. Atmosphere is that of a small, "mom & pop" home town diner. "Grandma's Recipes" appears to be a common place for...
Read moreWe found this gem by accident when we visited Flint on Friday 10/16/2020. We saw the rating of 4.6 stars on Google so we decided to give it a try for our hungry stomachs 😊. We arrived around 2 pm and it seemed like no cars at all on the parking lot. We thought 🤔 "Wait a minute .. thought it's a 4.6 ⭐ restaurant, but why it's empty??". Maybe the Covid-19 impacted the business a little. Nonetheless we decided to check it out. There's a sign on the entrance door: "No mask no entry". Inside the setting was so warming and relax, kind of southern setting. We saw there were couple tables of customers seated and dining. The server greeted and invited us to sit anywhere we'd like. First impression, it's not a franchise so food must be amazing, based on the high rating. Menu is simple but carries so many delicious options. Second impression, the server was really nice and welcoming, so customer service is priority. Once the foods were delivered rather fast, that's the third impression kicked in 😜. And finally, the food tasting began .... whoaaa 😮😮 .. speechless 😳. Fourth impression .. all foods were so tasteful and delicious. We ordered Olive Burger and Fries, Fish and Chips, Seafood Platter. Onion ring was to die for. Clam chowder was delicious. And the Johnnycake was mouthwatering 🤤. We even ordered fried chicken, chicken strips and buttermilk hotcakes to go (we ate them at home after 2 hours driving and taste was still delicious!!). Everything is cooked with love from Grandma's Recipes. Therefore we gave 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for this small gem in Flint. For sure we'll be back in the future. Hopefully they will still be in business after 25 years serving the local community and customers from outside Flint 🙏🏻😊 P.S. By the way .. few minutes after we arrived, several more customers started to dine...
Read moreWe ate at this restaurant on Tuesday as it came highly recommended for the hot roast beef sandwich. The exterior of the restaurant was not much to look at however the inside of the restaurant had an interesting look. We ordered the hot roast beef and fish sandwiches with onion rings. The food took about a half an hour to arrive to the table. We never got an update from the server. My friend suggested we get up and leave. The hot roast beef sandwich was good as was the onion rings, but my fish sandwich was warm - not hot. Towards the end of our meal, another customer came in with a dog. I love dogs and I’m all for dogs in restaurants if they are service animals or the restaurant has an outdoor area, but not a dog in someone’s jacket sitting at the table. It was a sweet dog, but made me wonder about the restaurant since they allowed this to occur. The waitress was thoughtful enough to put the extra fish sandwich and fries to go order in later with the cook so it wasn’t so cold when we were done eating our meal. I wasn’t sure how to rate the restaurant. It was okay but not the best food I’ve ever eaten. My friend enjoyed their sandwich and their portion was huge. We could have been here on an off night. I will probably try the restaurant again and revisit my scores...
