I have enjoyed trying brick oven pizza in places like Chicago, Florida, Michigan and Ohio and have never been disappointed….until now. Spent $30.00 on two Build Your Own pizzas with thin crust and extra mozzarella cheese. The mushrooms were tasteless, the sauce was thin and runny and also devoid of flavor and all the toppings were literally sliding off the pizza crust even AFTER it was completely cool.
The mozzarella was in circular clumps rather than melted which was a shame because it was high quality cheese with a nice flavor to it. The pepperoni also has a nice taste and was crunchy. The ground beef had an odd flavor almost as if it wanted to be sausage and was spicy and clumped in huge chunks on top of the pizza.
Several sections of the crust were burned to a crisp and both pizzas were drowned in some sort of viscous grease (or maybe really low quality olive oil) on the surface.
Neither one of my boys (12 and 15) would eat more than one bite of this abysmal excuse for pizza and they will even eat Little Caesar’s if they are hungry enough which really Illustrates how revolting the slime that coated the pizza was.
On a positive note the interior of the restaurant is adorable and clean & the waitstaff and cooks were all very polite, attentive and pleasant. If only the pizza quality was equal to the wonderful employees Rebel Pie would be a delight. In the meantime if you’re in Florence and want flavorful pizza, I recommend Stefano’s, Pizza Hut or even Papa...
Read moreHaving moved South from Southern NJ 6 years ago my family is always searching for foods we have been accustomed to our whole life. Having lived just 10 minutes from Philly we were spoiled with REAL Philly Cheesesteaks and Pizza. Finding both in the South has been a venture. Recently we visited Rebel Pie in Florence at the advice of a friend and to say we got our "fix" is an understatement. The smell of wood burning can be detected as soon as you exit your vehicle from the Pizza ovens. We entered and greeted by a very nice young lady who we found out was from Maryland. She would also be our waitress and she was great. We ordered the fired shrimp with bacon and blue cheese and they were delicious. For our pie choices we ordered a Margherita Pizza for our 12 yr old daughter and we created a favorite choice from Michaelangelo's in Philly...The basic pie with prosciutto (which is unheard of in most "pizza shops" in the South), spinach and basil. The pizza arrived and we were in heaven. Thin crust with slightly browned and crisp edges (it could have been a little more done on the bottom, but it did not take away from the flavor). We devoured both pies and were completely satisfied. Not to take away from Rebel Pie because they had some interesting sounding desserts, but there was a Rita's Italian Water Ice stand a few stores down and we had not had one of them in 6 years also. We will be making Rebel Pie a regular stop when we visit Florence and don't forget to properly tip...
Read moreThe three stars is because everyone was nice, the place was clean, the the crust recipe was good had it been cooked correctly. Maybe we are just not use to it, not from the area, but we have never been served on paper plates, with plastic silverware, unless it's at a cookout somewhere. But, fine, it is what it is. First, we ordered a shrimp appetizer that was suppose to have blue cheese and bacon on jumbo shrimp. As you can see, they were not jumbo shrimp, there was no blue cheese, and two tiny pieces of bacon crumble. The shrimp were very dry and not seasoned. Then, the pizza we ordered (pictured), was overcooked on the top, but the crust was not browned on the bottom at all...which happens first in a brick oven. In fact, it was so soggy there was juice from the sauce puddled under the pizza. Three things cause this....sauce out of a jar, too much water in the sauce, and undercooked. We would...
