Do not come to this place if youâre Black.
Iâm a Black doctor based up north, and my wife is White and an attorney. My wifeâs American (I took her name at marriage but use my birth name in my profession), and one of the kindest humans on this planet. So, instead of cutting the line when she eventually entered Paneterie to come stand next to me, she opted to wait two persons behind.
When I approached the counter to place my order, the staffer was quite hostile. She acted like I didnât know what a latte was and proceeded to whitesplain me (to the staffer, I donât drink at Starbucks but thank you for stereotyping me based on my skin color), and then spoke to me as though AAVE was my first language.
(Free Tip: Not every Black person is from America. Some of us speak French and Spanish, and Standard American English is our third language. Also, please train your male staffer to not fist bump a Black person just because they are Black. I am not Obama.)
Iâm very blessed to be married to a White woman who understood what was going on; my own wife warned me that if I complained, someone on the staff is probably going to say they have Black friends, Black family members or a Black spouse. (This is called âcredentialingâ for those of you who donât know this stereotypically manipulative move.) And, of course, my wife was right.
Itâs so sad in 2023 that "nice" or "liberal" White people canât admit their prejudices or stereotypes. They treat it like a death sentence when it's not.
I'm a man who can be sexist, and I do a TON of work so my wife, daughters and female colleagues don't have to suffer. It's that simple. You're not evil for having prejudices or stereotypes unless you get pleasure out of getting away with this, instead of examining and changing your behavior.
My empathetic and compassionate White wife did a TON of work on her prejudices and stereotypes before and while we were married, and if most White women were like her, the world would be a safer place for myself and Black women/men in general.
To the staff at Paneterie, I hope one day, you learn to not stereotype Black men, and Black women for that matter. Some of us are extremely wealthy with excellent legal resources, and choose grace 99 percent of the time instead of suing for biased or discriminatory behavior.
I hope your team doesnât continue treating Black people like stereotypes 10 years from now, and I hope management doesn't make excuses for this 10 years from now. If my wife can unlearn her stereotypes, then there's hope for your company. Pick up a book by Robin DiAngelo - it will do...
Read moreI have worked next door to Paneterie for 6 years. That means, I have probably eaten food from here more than any other reviewer. I order lunch or breakfast from here maybe 4 times per week (even when I am not working next door). I can confidently say it is a fantastic place to get your coffee, lunch, breakfast, or dessert treat. Everything is so darn delicious.
The girls that work here are superwomen. They deal with hungry and impatient clients often and serve with a smile and patience every time. They are able to make modifications if necessary and while it may take a little while to get your food (especially during the lunch rush) it is because it is made FRESH and with care. I love Paneterie and am always met with a warm greeting. It definitely gives your local french cafe vibes. I highly recommend it for lunch dates casual or professional and make sure to check out their custom cake order catalogue for...
