I believe in leaving honest reviews....so with that being said...today I took my husband out for lunch for a treat. I've been wanting to give Turnpike's new owners a second chance. Last year we ordered some take out and it really wasn't that great but they literally had just taken over so I overlooked it. Todat upon entering we noticed how clean the dining area was and we were promptly greeted and seated. My husband ordered the Giovanni Italian sub, I got the Black n Blue Burger and we splurged with the Fried Green Tomatoes app. The Fried Green Tomatoes appetizer was excellent. It is served with a "roumalade" sauce but I personally felt like it was thousand island dressing. It didn't matter because they were so good. The Black n Blue Burger was honestly nothing exceptional. The presentation was nice and the bacon was cooked perfectly. It didn't seem to be fresh ground beef, in fact, I would wager it was a frozen patty. It definitely was not worth $15 but this is the world we live in. The Giovanni sub was the worst. We looked at the online menu ahead because my husband has brain cancer and has trouble talking. To save him some embarrassment I thought it would be easier for him to see exactly what he wanted. Unfortunately, this sandwich looked absolutely nothing like what is advertised. It had very little meat and two slices of cheese...he ate only half and this picture is what we brought home. Again, definitely not worth $15.95. Our server was exceptional...very kind. The restaurant is very clean. It just left us feeling deflated in our expectations. Due to my husband's cancer we are struggling financially and going out to eat like this is a rate treat. Our bill came to $48 for lunch. The only consolation was those delicious Fried Green Tomatoes. I recommended to our server that they try pairing them with cheesy grits like the Tupelo Honey Cafe in Asheville NC does. It sounds like a strange combination but it's incredible. So that's my honest review. I feel bad for having to write it but the quality of the meals was not reflected...
Read morearrived a little before 2pm 4 tables of guests. 2 were eating (1 table was an employee with her family.. the other was an older man eating alone) and 2 were in the process of leaving. we sat down. took a few mins for a sever to come over. handed us menus and said she would be back to get our drinks. came back, never told us the "specials" (which were on a tiny board at the back of the restaurant and such small print you had to walk up to see it. we asked a couple questions about different menu items. we ordered 2 waters, 1 with lemon & 1 sweet n low (when the server brought it she said very snarky "we have lemonade" I replied "she is diabetic and cant have the fountain lemonade because of the amount if sugar in it" we ordered the fried pickles and a cold Turkey sandwich with plain fries. 20 mins passed. food came out, nice portion size. the "smoked turkey" had 0 flavor and didnt taste smoked at all. the breading was falling off the pickles so you had to pick it up and eat it separate from the pickle. owner came by thanked us for coming in saw I wasnt eating and asked if everything was ok. I said yea it's fine just didnt care for it
server wasnt friendly until she saw me not eating it. asked if everything was ok, i replied "yea it's ok, just no flavor" she went to the owner and told her. (I brought it home for my teenager cause let's be real they will eat anything) server offered dessert and we declined and I said "no thanks we arent going to pay $6.99 for a brownie" she did say "sorry " and went to get our bill cashing out I asked if they honor Military with a discount and they do so for that 👍👍👍
2 waters jr. turkey sub with fries fried pickles $15+
for the service half a star for the portion size ☆☆ for the price 👎 dont waste your time snow birds will keep it open in the winter but after the "newness" wears off dont see it staying open long unless the staff gets friendlier and the dont...
Read moreWe went to this place today with high expectations from what we have seen and heard. I have never written a bad review of a place ever.. Until today. I would leave it alone, but the waitress was very challenging when I asked questions about offering a steak or steak based meal and there being no steak sauce. ( Said it is too expensive for them to buy A-1). Our visit went like this. Saturday morning approximately 1130am, we walk in and get sat. The waitress says give her a few minutes to come back for our drinks because "we just had a few tables all at once" about 10-15 mins later she comes back and asks about our drinks. We wait another ten mins for two coffees. After dropping off the drinks she says she needs to go get her book. We wait a few more minutes and she returns. We order, but were almost about to leave when she came to the table finally. Food came out fairly quick. We barely could eat our meals due to the vegetables that go in the skillets being barely cooked. Steak skillet was bland and all they had was hot sauce to accommodate it. The quality vs the price didn't make sense. We barely ate our meals and went to pay the 45$ for a steak skillet, pancakes and another dish with eggs that she couldn't eat due to the Ketchup bottle being all water practically. The was no cognizance by the staff to see that we may be displeased. We payed and that was when the lame talk of steak sauce came up. I can say we won't go back. We traveled to try this place and it was not at all what they were when they initially opened. Possibly just a bad understaffed day? There were plenty of empty tables and no wait. The portions were ginormous, so if we did like it, we would have been full for sure. Now the place was immaculate and clean as a whistle. I will definitely say we appreciated that. But...
