(02/26/2022) Update: I've now been to chance bar a total of 4 times in the last 6 months. Every time is just as delicious as the last. The food is always on point. The service is excellent. The environment is both elagent and in inviting. The passion that Chef Corey has for his restaurant can be tasted on each and every plate that he sends out of the kitchen. The oysters tonight were very fresh and exciting on the palate. The caesar salad was HUGE and the dressing was delightful. I loved the thinly sliced little potato chips that were used as a substitute for traditional bread croutons! The duck curry was very tender and cooked to perfection. It's broth had an incredible depth of oomami that made each bite as exciting as the last. The burger and onion rings never disappoint. They're as consistent as the first time I fell in love with them. If you still haven't tried out this amazing restaurant, I strongly encourage you to give them a CHANCE!
Chance Bar was an awesome experience. I would say this restaurant best described as a diamond in the rough. Although it's location is not directly downtown, it's good and service rivals that of any restaurant located in the heart of the city. The beer bread appetizer with whipped honey butter got better with every bite. The soft pillowy center combined with the crunchy crust made for a fabulous starter. The entrés were HUGE! The double bacon cheeseburger featured as the chefs special came highly recommended by our waitress. I will say it was arguably one of the best burgers I've had in Fort Wayne. The quality and freshness of the Wood Farms ground beef made for a juicy and delicious burger. The entourage of sweet pickles, burger sauce, red onion, shredded lettuce, bacon, and cheese was a winning combination that made for an amazing bite. The korean bbq fried chicken sandwich can't be outdone. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy. The korean bbq was bursting with bold flavors and was accompanied by a fresh slaw. The onion rings were light and airy, super crispy, and not too greasy. The fried potatoes were cooked well and had just the right amount of seasoning. They both were complimented by a housemate garlic aioli. Our portions were so large we could barely finish our plates. I look forward to revisiting Chance to try their Sunday brunch as well as some of their dessert options. Thanks to the Chance Bar staff for an amazing...
Read moreI took my girlfriend here last night after hearing good things from friends. We had looked at the menu online, it seemed like an upscale and exciting menu. When we arrive we are seated by Kait, our server for the evening.
She brings water and we order a bottle of wine. There was no wine service and the bottle was brought to us already opened. Not a huge deal for a $40 bottle of wine, but I'm glad we didn't get the $120 barolo.
We order the chicken liver mousse as an appetizer. We're enjoying the wine and talking about the atmosphere, guessing at what the building was before Chance. I notice people who ordered after us getting their food, I check my watch, it's been 20 minutes. A few minutes later the mousse arrives. I'm not kidding when I say that dish could be plated in less than one minute, yet it took almost 25 to reach us.
We ordered the Salmon and Pork Shoulder steak for entrees at the same time we ordered appetizers. From order placement to food arrival, over an hour had passed. The food was presented well, but it was stone cold. The pork was drier than the bone it came on. The accoutrement to her salmon was less than room temperature. The spaetzle that same with the pork had good flavor and seemed housemade but again, it was dry and cold. Both our dishes were obscured by a sprout garnish that was too much and hard to cut so it was in the way the whole meal. It seemed to us that the chef was far more concerned with presentation than freshness or flavor.
All the while, Kait our server never checked on us. Not to see if the food was good, not to acknowledge that we waited so long, not even when my date and I made direct eye contact with her on our way out did she say goodbye or smile or even wave. I had to raise my hand like a first- grader just to get a fork. Why were other people getting their food so much faster than us? Is it normal to wait 25 minutes for an appetizer here? Are entrees always served stone cold and dry at Chance? I guess I'll never know, because I don't see us...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I visited for the first time last night, because we'd seen so many rave reviews and the first spot we planned for dinner wasn't taking walk-in tables until later in the evening. First off, the dining area was empty on a Friday at 5:45, which we thought was kind of odd. When we sat down, the chairs were soggy and saggy, so much that it hurt to sit in them. The music in the dining room was so loud we couldn't have a conversation comfortably. Our server was very nice and attentive. However, we felt bad for him because the chef's specials list was quite lengthy and each dish sounded almost pretentious in its complexity. It was hard to keep track of or be excited about anything on special. We ordered the deviled eggs as an appetizer, and the flavors were just not there. The mole was weird, the eggs were a bit too soft, and the texture of the dish was too one-note. I ordered the gnocchi alla amatriciana. There was no bacon or fennel in the dish, and it was drowning in tomato sauce. Not at all what I'd expected from the menu description. It was served in a comically large bowl with tall sides, over which I had to hover to even see what I was eating. Super weird presentation. My boyfriend ordered the burger, which he said was bland, way too greasy and made him feel "gross" (his exact words). He felt like he had to muscle it down. The onion rings were extremely greasy, over-breaded and - again - comically oversized somehow. Our dinner cost more than $100 after tip. It feels like we were ripped off, honestly. The bar down the street from our house has better-quality food, and it's half the price with nicer ambiance. Overall, we left underwhelmed and feeling like we'd be somehow duped or tricked somehow by the glowing reviews. Maybe it was a bad night, but it was surely a poor experience we don't...
