Absolutely great dinner dining experience for our Anniversary. My husband made a reservation about a month ago and day of requested a seat against the wall (not in the middle of the room) for more privacy and they were able to accommodate. I recommend requesting a downstairs seating arrangement if you are unable to do stairs.
Location: right off the road, easy to miss the sign if you're not really looking for it. We actually passed it and had to turn around. The actual restaurant sits off the roadway down its own little driveway. Parking onsite and was easy to find on our Saturday night reservation.
Atmosphere: very classy. Outside seating area beautiful with large water fountains and koi pond with table candlelight. Inside also cozy with upstairs & downstairs seating- all tables no booths. Very clean. Wine bottles decorate the walls. Not white table cloth but nice tables with table candlelight. Nice dinnerware.
Attire: there was a mixture of casual (jeans and blouse/regular cotton collared shirt) & dress (dresses and nice jeans with nice long sleeve button up shirt). I suppose treat it however you want based on the occasion. I wore a black dress and my husband wore a black button down collared shirt with nice jeans.
Service: Very friendly and welcoming from the start to end. Our waitress Rouge was very sweet. She brought us to our table and told us the story about the wine bottles on the walls. She was in no rush to seat us and leave. She took her time telling us about scanning the QR code for the menu. Rich, Our waiter was very nice as well. He was patient and able to recommend/describe any entree & dessert.
Food: prior to our meal, we were given a complimentary carrot soup- it was warm and amazing. Our entrees came out pretty quick. It was warm and served on a hot plate. We both got their chicken fried ribeye topped with lobster & gravy with mashed potatoes. The breading on the ribeye was absolutely delicious and crunchy. The steak itself was good but could use a little seasoning. The lobster was soft and flavorful. The gravy was also delicious (more please!). The mashed potatoes were decent, definitely needed salt. For dessert we ordered the butterscotch bread pudding with salted caramel ice cream 20/10 you must get it! The bread pudding was warm, crunchy on the top & soft inside. A mixed bite of the pudding, ice cream, and berries were perfection. Definitely top 2 of our favorite desserts at a restaurant, right after Gordon Ramsay's sticky toffee pudding. We did not order any wine but saw plenty of people with it at their tables.
Pricing: this is a more upscale restaurant, so expect to pay more than your typical restaurant. Our total was $100.14 with 2 chicken fried steaks ($39), 1 tea, and the bread pudding dessert ($11). Again, didn't order wine but saw the menu ranged about $12-15 per glass and about $40-150 per bottle. Appetizers $11-16. Steaks $37-56. Quail $34 and chicken $28. Seafood $28-34. Desserts $11-12.
Overall, if you're looking for good food or a place for a special dinner, I would recommend this restaurant. The ambiance, service and food were all good. They do seem to work hard to keep their place clean, classy...
Read moreWe came here for spring break and to celebrate my friends birthday. We read many reviews that boasted this restaurant and their steak. We asked how the medium rare steak was prepared and the server stated this was prepared with a warm red center and the rare steak was prepared with a cold red center. We ordered the steak that was between these two temperatures. And the server appeared to interpret our request. When our steak came out it was very rare we asked thst they cook it to medium which is what our friend had ordered(mind you his steak was actually cooked to medium rare and had a bloody center). Our steak came out well done and was like beef jerky. They just took our steak and put it back on the grill instead of firing a new steak. I expressed my disdain with our steaks texture and taste with the manager and he said he would let the cook know. For a restaurant that boasts itself on having the best steak in Fredericksburg and being on people's bucket lists I am sorley disappointed.
The manager look dumbfounded and shocked when I told him that if you cut into a steak and re-cook it, the steak will turn into Jerky and the texture turns into a granulated peice of meat. I am shocked he didn't know this. I am a personal cook and have worked in restaurants for years. So I know how steak should be prepared.
The long and short of this is that the manager did nothing and stared at me with a lost look on his face. Not to mention our sides went cold while we waited for our new steak to come out.
I would not recommend this place, they don't know how to cook a steak and clearly they do not care about the quality of steak they are producing
In response to the manager I never insulted your staff. I have no idea where you recieved this feedback. I find it wildly inappropriate for you to respond and state that I was insulting your team. We treated your servers with respect and all of your team was attentive. My only complaint was on a steak and your unprofessionalism in response to a public complaint speaks volume. Thank you for further supporting my argument in the treatment I receive from your...
Read moreThe ambiance is nice, the food is pretty good, and the servers are competent and knowledgeable.
As far as the so-called “chef” woman who left the review several weeks ago that was dumbfounded that they threw the original steak back on the grill, I find it hilarious how unfamiliar she was with traditional steak temperatures that are near universal standards across the industry and apparently seems to know something that every other upscale steakhouse chef in Texas doesn’t. There’s nothing wrong with putting a slightly undercooked steak back on the grill and if they looked at you stupidly for claiming it would turn steak into jerky, well…
However, as nice as this place is, it just simply doesn’t reflect the price. For a $56 ribeye, I expect this to rival Taste of Texas, Steak 48 or Perri’s. The steak was good, but that’s just it - good. Nothing memorable, although the Jezebel dip was absolutely fantastic.
We were mistakenly given someone else’s bread order, but unbeknownst to us initially, this wasn’t complimentary bread that you find with most places of this caliber. What’s worse, the oil served with the bread just flat out wasn’t very good. Ditch the olive component, it’s overpowering. The reason I even mentioned the bread however is that after I told the server that I was still willing to pay for a second basket (as I still wanted the bread itself to complement my meal and use with the Jezebel dip), they forgot to put in the order.
Overall, did we enjoy the food? Yes, no doubt. But was it so good that it rivals the upscale steakhouses in Houston or Austin? Absolutely not and being that it’s priced competitively with them, my expectations were fairly high going in and weren’t met. This is why I’ve settled at a 3 star score. I didn’t hate it, I had a nice time and left satiated, but not satisfied in the way I am when leaving other restaurants. I respect the waitstaff and the overall presentation and thought put into everything, and it’s obvious management cares enough to stay up to date with reviews and address any concerns. I wish...
