This restaurant is very mismanaged. My wife and I arrived at 7:30 PM. We requested Hibachi and were told by the host there was one party ahead of us and that it would be a few minutes before we were seated. No problem at all. Totally expect some amount of wait for Hibachi, especially being in a small party. We saw the party ahead of us seated but noticed that the host now seemed very frantic. A few parties came in and were seated for Hibachi almost immediately which made us wonder if our name was still on the list. But the host kept looking up at us. “Just a few more minutes,” he’d say. As 8:00 PM rolled by, two families walked in and were now in the Hibachi queue. Several times, waitresses and cooks came up from the back to talk to the host which seemed odd, as if they were dealing with some other issue. This made the few-minute-turned-half-hour wait seem more reasonable. Thirty more minutes passed though with no news. At 8:30 PM, a family of seven walked in the door. About two minutes later we were finally seated. An hour wait in total but at least we were now comfortable and had a great view of the grill. As soon as we could get situated though, the host came by and motioned for us to stand up again. He told us we were going to the party room. He then added five place settings to the table leaving us to awkwardly stand in the middle of the dining room for several minutes. The party of seven who had checked in seconds before were seated in our spots. We followed him to the entrance and he gestured for us to sit back down in the waiting area we had just been in for over an hour. We waited again for the party room to be cleared out. Finally, we were seated with the two families that had now waited over thirty minutes. The party room has two grills and we were seated on the far right side. Because there were two kids at the left grill, we figured the chef would use that one and we were right which put us approximately 10 feet from the action. Understandable, but not really the same Hibachi experience. After an hour wait, the pace of Hibachi seems to take much longer. I took the first picture when we were first seated: 8:36 PM. I took the second picture at 8:55 PM. Still no chef. You’ll see I ordered Edamame and it had been boiled and salted, but arrived cold. Chef came by shortly after, which put our entree at 9:30 PM, two hours after we arrived. My wife prefers her steak medium rare, but to her chagrin, has to order it well done for medical reasons. The chef made a joke at her expense. Needless to say, it was difficult to fork up $60 for the experience my wife and I had at Shoji. It’s strange that everyone in line is quoted “just a few minutes,” but that could mean immediately, thirty minutes from now, or in an hour. Perhaps if we were in a larger party or had kids, the treatment would have been better.

Update: I've been back a couple times and while some of what I wrote before is still true today, they improved greatly. The Hibachi is better, but I think where they shine is the dining area for sushi. Old review: Pros: Nice new restaurant, nice staff, clean. Cons: Seems flavor is lacking in almost everything I tried. Hibachi chefs don't have much enthusiasm anymore either, food was very bland. Miso soup was just hot water with a little color. Fried rice hardly had any flavor, just tons of oil... Hardly any egg, green onions or flavorings. Sauces not very tasty, overwhelming horseradish in the creamy sauce. Spicy tuna roll was mushy and not spicy.

Please note: this is my first ever experience at this restaurant. Absolutely terrible establishment. I’m quite certain the only reason this restaurant is close to 5 stars is due to fraudulent reviews. My family and I came here for a reservation we made in advance for my birthday. Place was off as soon as we walked in. There was only 1 host and he was also answering the phone. We did not have his attention for about 7 minutes. Finally, he gave us the time of day and due to unforeseen circumstances, we were about 10 minutes late for our 7:30 pm reservation. We were advised of a 20 minute wait and completely understood due to our tardiness. 20 minutes go by and the host is running like a chicken with his head cut off. People were coming in and out grabbing togo orders and he was chasing after them asking if they paid... how ghetto is that? There was no seating system, it was so obvious that these employees did not know how to handle any type of rush. 40 minutes go by, it is now 8:20. the host advises us of 5 minutes and that they’re getting our tables together now. It is now 8:40. They are seating a party of 10 now. We have been waiting an hour and have been repeatedly lied to about the wait time. Our family decided to walk out and go to a different place because it was obvious these people were intentionally wasting our time. As we’re exiting the building, the host chases after us and begs us not to leave... I was disgusted!! Now you care? I told my family NO, and let’s GO NOW. He was trying to offer us $50 off our meal... then $100... my family was almost successfully persuaded until he told us to come back tomorrow for the discount and he would “remember us.” Hell no we ain’t coming back! Such a trash, un-classy, dingy, unorganized, discombobulated, facetious, and shady establishment, will never come back.

TL;DR: Do not waste your precious time...

I would absolutely recommend staying away from Shoji Hibachi & Sushi. The food is average, but the service and manager makes up for any positives with utter incompetence and complete lack of knowledge of how to run a restaurant.

My most recent trip we sat in the hibachi area. Two of us ordered hibachi and two of us ordered sushi as our meal. After they were halfway done with the hibachi I began to ask about the status of my rolls. They kept saying they were working on them. Then they would send another waiter to tell me it would be 5-10 minutes at the most. I asked them twice to cancel my order if it would be more than three more minutes twice and then they finally brought it 57 minutes after we ordered it. It was only five small rolls. The other two in our party had been done eating for 20 minutes when we received our food.

I spoke to the manager and she never apologized, just told me they were doing their best. Not even a one dollar discount for all of the trouble. They had a large to go order and they got backed up. Sad that someone running a restaurant cannot figure to prioritize the in house customers. We have had a number of issues in the past where she cannot keep reservations and will make you wait. On one occasion I was standing waiting for a table next to the chairs and she yelled at me to sit down. If they had someone else running it in the evening they would have a lot more potential to be a decent place.

There are plenty of good Japanese restaurants in the area. Do yourself a favor and visit...
