Well, the old-fashioned shake-shoppe décor was very nice and the restaurant was clean. And the food was good, once I got all of it, but I guess there was some sort of confusion with the cashier that I am STILL trying to untangle.
My husband and I went to pick up lunch from this place and then continue our errands. Once we got home to eat, I discovered my chili dog had no hot dog in it. Thinking it was a mistake, I drove 20 minutes back to get it corrected.
The cashier who previously served us was there and another lady who works there came up to the counter as I was asking about my food. I showed them the bun with all the trimmings and no hot dog and explained my quandary.
The cashier then replied "Well, that's what a chili dog is." And it went something like this:
Me: "A chili dog is a bun with dressings and no hot dog?"
Cashier: "Well, I could have sworn I asked you if you wanted a hot dog in it and you said no."
Me: "What?" I am flabbergasted, as this is not how the original conversation went, and even if she asked me such, which she had not, I would be further nonplussed since I started my WHOLE ORDER WITH "I want a foot long hot dog with chili and cheese and onions and sour kraut." I confirmed this with my husband, I am not mistaken, that is the sentence I said.
2nd worker: "Yeah, hun, she rang you up for a bun."
Me: "Well, I wanted a chili dog..."
Cashier: "That's what most people think a chili dog is, just a bun with the stuff on it."
I was so confused and unhappy I just stared for a second, unable to muster a reply, truly at a loss for words.
2nd worker: "I can fix that for you hun. Lemme fix it." She then took the old unwanted food away and proceeded to make me a new one the way I wanted it.
Me to 2nd worker: "Thank you."
The original cashier once again tells me that, I guess, people around here order chili dogs that way, expecting no dog. I just replied "Well, I'm not from around here so I guess I'll remember that for the future."
I'm still a little confused. I just can't fathom a whole community ordering buns with sauce and no protein by saying the phrases "chili dog" or "hot dog" in their sentence. I mean, it just feels like having someone say "Gimme a grilled cheese with mayo and onions" while expecting to receive two pieces of bread with mayo, onions and not a speck of cheese. It just doesn't make sense.
And let's say that's just the natural order of the place, a local custom I now know how to navigate. Well, I still wouldn't expect a hearty verbal tug-of-war over a solid two bucks. At my current restaurant job, wherever the mistake happened, customer, window, table, as the cashier I am expected to apologize to you and get you a corrected item. It's been that way at my last three restaurant jobs.
Maybe that's not the way all places operate, but I feel like it must not be incredibly TOO much of a loss or inconvenience for some places if they keep practicing it.
Other than that frustrating and time-consuming snag in my trip here, I still liked the food and do want to return to try different items. I just hope they aren't all that...

I Love Love Love how they they put their LOGO on the cups, hot dog wrappers, onion ring bags, etc....still showing their brand to me is a statement that they don't cut corners and go with plain white to save money!!! Very impressed by that!!! Also the slaw was so fresh and so was the cut onions!!! The sauce or Chili is great!!! The buns are steamed!! The cheeseburger was fried in front of me, Homemade!!! Tony said definitely do-able again!!!! I Know that I will definitely do the hot...
Read moreOk, so a 5 is high.....however Im rating this on the food which was not bad at all, the ice cream, who doesn't love ice cream? Most importantly, the staff and service. My family and I visited Gallopolis 12/22 to see the lights from Saint Albans WV. We were not disappointed! I say that to say this. We left the lights late, arriving at Shake Shoppe at probably 9:40. The place was hoppin. The young ladies up front could not have been more pleasant from taking our order to delivering our order. The placed closed at 10, but they still had customers finishing their orders. I know these young ladies, along with the rest of the staff had to be tired, but none of them showed the least bit of annoyance because they had to stay over. Im sure they were cleaning and prepping for the next day, but all too often today kindness isn't the response received. As we finished up and departed we were tol to have a great evening and thanked for coming. This team and their manager DESERVE a 5! We will...
