This is definitely a Garland staple. It’s been here for over 70 years, and has been a tradition in my family. My grandmother worked as a waitress whenever it was called “Black Hawk Diner” and I’ve been coming here since I was a baby in the late 90s. While the owner has changed over the years, the food has not.
My enchiladas were delicious, and the onion on top is chefs kiss. These enchiladas have been like this for at least 15-20 years. While I wouldn’t call them fully “authentic” Mexican enchiladas, they are very flavorful. Don’t expect to have authentic Mexican food at this purely American diner. Their Americanized Enchiladas and Tacos are always so good, and definitely hit the spot. The rice is good as well, and they make it with a hint of tomato juice or sauce. The beans are whole pinto beans, cooked perfectly as well. I love their chips, because they are like a thinner, white corn chip, my favorite. Their salsa is a nice mix of tomatoes and vegetables. While it’s not super chunky, it’s not watery either. Great for the dipper or scooper, and provides a nice fresh flavor with a slight spice that even the pickiest eaters can enjoy.
My husbands catfish was fresh, super crispy and very flavorful. It also tasted very clean. What I mean by that is that some restaurants with catfish have kind of a dirt flavor, or dirty water flavor. Which is pretty typically common, due to where catfish come from. This fish didn’t have a dirty flavor at all, which made it much more enjoyable especially for the price. It was also all you can eat catfish day today (Friday) as well, that’s if you don’t get full first because you also receive hush puppies and a decent portion of two sides.
Their salad is TO DIE for. I’ve always LOVED their salads because they give you plenty of veggies, including tomatoes and carrots. The cheddar cheese tops it off to make it over all delicious. If you’re a ranch fiend, they make an in house ranch that is so delicious, I purchase cups of it to go home with me. It doesn’t taste like your typical bottled ranch. I have not found any ranch better, even Wingstop’s.
Our service was great, very attentive. We didn’t have to ask for refills, and each of us had maybe 2 or 3 glasses of water or tea. The lady was very nice.
Prices are still very affordable, and are honestly equivalent or even a little less than fast food prices for better quality food.
However, this is an OLD diner. It definitely looks like you’ve stepped in the 70s, and the booths are pretty worn. So don’t expect a “romantic” or “fancy restaurant”. It definitely screams “home grown” and “diner of the south”. However it’s clean, and there hasn’t been smoking for years at this point. Don’t let it’s looks fool you though, this is definitely a place worth trying if you love diner food with a country flare.
There are daily specials as well for lunch and dinner. All are so...
Read moreThe Owner is over worked and very Rude. It might be the color on our skin that he has a problem with. I thought I had found the perfect place to get half way good food and service. Till the owner was going ape, and want to tell my friend he was wasting food. Who cares long as we pay for it. Yes we took it personally because he only had a attitude with the only 2 blk people in the place. They where having all you can eat catfish. We reorder 2 refills of catfish and more hush puppies for my friend. He pointed out he had just throw out hush puppies from our table. I told him they where mine and I don't eat hush puppies. My friend ate all his and wanted more with the hot fish. That's when the owner come unglued, went to the dish pan, pick up the plate to show us how we where wasting food. We sat and waited on the reorder of fish and puppies to come for about 15 mins. So when he came to bring the bill, I asked him about the refill order he took. He got mad, went to the kitchen and came back with 1 reorder of 2pieces of fish. He just dropped it off on the table and walked off. I told my friend let not eat it because he probably SPIT or done something worse too it. We paid the bill & left. Before this experience I had been there a few time to pick up call in order. With No problems. I've also ate in, while his son was the Manager on duty, and I received "EXCELLENT" service each time. I don't know if he was tied, or having a bad day. But it sure made me and my friend feel unwelcome and unwanted in his business. So Since we where the only blacks, and the only 1's he had a attitude with. We figured it was "OUR SKIN COLOR". Thanks but no Thanks You, " if you judge me on my color, you DAM SURE WANT, be counting any...
Read moreI wouldn't know how the food was because I had to throw it away. My friend specifically ordered roast beef to go for me without gravy and when she saw them take out a ladle and ladle something, she specifically reminded them not to put gravy on my roast beef. The gal assured her it was not gravy but spaghetti for someone else.
When my friend brought my food to me, there was gravy all over it. When I called to discuss this with them, the employee said she asked for no gravy too late. That was absolutely untrue since she had previously voiced her concern and then as I was talking to her, some guy got on the phone and when I mentioned the voice changed because I was speaking to a female, he said "I'm the man", No introduction, nothing. He was One of the rudest people I've ever met in the restaurant industry. If someone has a dietary restriction and cannot have gravy, whether my friend had asked for no gravy too late (she didn't) or not SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADVISED THERE WAS GRAVY ON THE FOOD.
That was a worthless meal in the trash and as a first-time and potential future customer, I will never, ever recommend this restaurant to anyone for the way I was treated by that rude, condescending excuse of "the man" who kept talking over me telling me his employee was right (he was not out there at the time, so she-said-she-said) and refused to listen to me. I had to hang up because he would not let me speak.Bad...
