I'm not underwhelmed, or disappointed, I'm angry. I walked over, in the rain, from the Flying J. The waitress was very nice, I got the guacamole live, which is good.
I ordered the beef fajitas, and they came out looking and smelling alright. Then I noticed the skillet they came out on was too hot. I started stirring the meat and vegetables trying to keep them from burning, when I found it was too hot for that to even work I had to pull ice out of my drink to try and cool the skillet. Meanwhile I'm looking for my waitress to ask for a plate so I can get this food off the skillet. She finally come out from the back and I ask for a plate because the skillet is too hot and is burning the vegetables. She gets the plate for me, and scurries off as I'm pouring my food, not even bothering to follow up on my mention of the food being burnt.
I like my fajita vegetables to be caramelized and even a touch charred, but these vegetables were charcoal by the time I got them on the plate. It smelled and looked like what you scrape off your BBQ grill.
I tried to eat it anyway. I grabbed a tortilla and used the meat and what few vegetables I thought were salvageable. It didn't work.
That pungent taste from the burnt vegetables had flavored the meat. The meat was poorly cut for fajitas, cut into large cubed chunks rather than tortilla suited strips. It was impossible to bite through, tough to chew and full of gristle. As I'm trying to chew this mouthful of disappointment, the waitress comes by and asks if everything is okay. I shake my head no since I'm still trying to chew this tough meat and she says she's going to refill my drink. Which she comes back with, sets down and runs off. Ignoring that I had indicated things were NOT okay.
I tried to finish the tortilla full of fail. But out of the three pieces of meat I managed to fit into the tortilla, I managed to fully eat one, and two ended up spit into a napkin when I realized I wouldn't be able to chew them enough to swallow.
So, I set the fajitas on the other side of the table and just waited for my waitress to come around again. 10 minutes later she comes and asks again if everything is okay. This time I was able to verbally say no, and when asked told her the vegetables were burnt beyond edible and the meat was tough and chewy as leather. I was very polite and matter of fact.
She took the plate and said that maybe the manager will take it off my bill and just walked away. I sat there another 10 minutes waiting to hear back. Sat there while my waitress did things that didn't involve speaking to me. She finally comes over, almost seeming surprised I was still there and said I didn't need to pay for the food. The manager never even bothered to come out and speak to me personally. So I asked her, "Are you fixing the food, or am I just not paying for it?" She said the manager said I didn't need to pay and then took the plate that had the cheese, sour cream and beans on it from the table.
I stayed for a little bit longer in case I had misinterpreted the waitress. I was just ignored for the next 10 minutes. At that point it was very clear they were not going to be trying to make things right by fixing my order. It was very much a "You don't need to pay, you can leave now." Type situation. So I left, and I'm even less happy to have been felt forced to leave behind an almost entirely full bowl of delicious guacamole, and having wasted over an hour of my drive clock. I didn't ask to speak to a manager before I left because it had already been made clear by their absence that they were not interested in speaking with me, and combined with how upset I was over the situation, nothing good would have come from it.
The food has potential, if they would cook it properly, but the service and management are beyond terrible.
I will be letting my friends and other drivers exactly what my experience was, save a few from having to waste their time or energy...
Read moreMy intention was to give this place a 5 star rating as the place looks excellent once you get in the front door. The outside let's say needs some curb appeal but I digress.
I will say it's fantastic that it's next door to a Flying J truck stop, so a place to park my truck and walk over.
Anyway I got in, was seated and asked if I could take some pictures for Google maps. I was told manager was coming to see me. We had a quick chat told him who I was and that I was from Canada etc.. Got the go ahead.
Manager suggested one of their best meals. It's the plate on the front cover of the menu. You get a charcoal lava rock bowl with hot ingredients including shrimp, steak and chicken along with peppers, onions, and other spices etc.. You also get a plate with other ingredients like lettuce, quacamole, cheese, rice and beans etc..
Normally they give you flour or cornstarch fajitas flat things to put your ingredients in, roll it up and eat it. Well I can't eat these so I asked for some hard tacos shells. Waitress doesn't say sure no problem, we will substitute like most places would. Nope! She is going to check if this is even possible.
Long story short, she forgets a lot of stuff. I tried to ask other staff members for all the stuff she keeps forgetting. Their response is not , no problem . I will bring that right out for you. Nope! I will go find your waitress.
Now she comes to the table only because her coworker has told her I need something. Lack of communication as the coworker never tells her what I wanted. Now I feel like an Asshole because I have to ask her again for stuff I had already previously asked for.
Meanwhile my food is getting cold. I tell tell can I get the taco shells. She only brings me 2. I gotta ask for more and that I need some napkins. Anyway this goes on with a couple other items and it's frustrating.
I remember the Manager saying if I needed anything let him know, but I know this is a family run business and don't want to get this woman in trouble.
The food was good but the lack of service ruined the whole experience. At the end of the meal I take a couple more pictures and she stops by the table with the bill and asks if she can refill my coke. I say yes, but No Ice please. I'm crossing my fingers. Unfortunately it comes back with a third of the cup filled with ice.
It was at this point I gave up. I obviously wasn't important enough to remember anything I asked for. I was polite and still tipped her over 25 %. I paid her and left maintaining a quiet, polite outward appearance like a good...
Read moreGood Mexican food is a bit of an enigma, the quality and flavor of the food doesn't always coincide with the atmosphere or even the perceived cleanliness of the establishment. In fact, the best Mexican food I have ever had was a tri tip burrito out of the back of a gas station in, I think, Salinas California so I have come to associate dirty, holes in the wall with delicious Mexican food. That being said, I am once again in a bit of a conundrum. The atmosphere at this location is quite pleasant, unmistakably Mexican themed but with a clean, corporate look and feel, family friendly and clearly popular with the locals, not the kind of place I would associate with good Mexican food and yet here I am shouting praises for the enchiladas Verdes I have just consumed. I am stuffed and yet find myself wondering what that delicious odor that is wafting through the air can possibly be. So why only 4 stars instead of 5? At every Mexican restaurant as I'm sure everyone knows, the meal will begin with a complimentary serving of tortilla chips with salsa/pico de gallo and my experience was no different here. I was even delighted to see they also brought out refried beans with the chips, an addition that I had not previously experienced and a welcome one, but to my great disappointment and surprise the chips were corn chips instead of flour and clearly premade from a bag! This, in my opinion, is a major faux pau especially in a restaurant with such good quality Mexican food. Cut the flour tortillas up, toss them in the fryer and give us the full experience that we deserve! Of course, if you are not as much of a Mexican foodie snob as I and you can overlook the bagged corn chips I think you will probably enjoy your meal at this...
