We were very excited to try Rio Brazil last night. I really want to see this place succeed, and think it has potential, but there is definitely room to improve.
Ambiance: 3. Walking in, we had really high hopes for this place. It was packed and nicely decorated and looks very unique and upscale. We were seated next to the wine wall, but it was disconcerting to realize you can see through the gaps in the wall to the other side. I assume using glass versus a solid background is to make the space feel bigger, but using mirrored glass inside would have a similar effect and wouldn’t have made me feel like I was intruding on the people on the other side every time I glanced over.
We felt a bit crowded next to the wall—our elbows kept hitting it, but if we shifted away from the wall we were in the way of servers trying to get by. When we come back, we’ll ask to be seated elsewhere.
Service: 2.5. We arrived at 7:40 for our 7:45 reservation and were told it would be a few minutes—not unexpected as we were early. But we then waited over 20 minutes to be seated as we watched at least 4 groups leave, and 1 group of 3 seated ahead of us (we think we heard them say they had an 8pm reservation). We asked the hostess for the status and she assured us we were next, but it still took another 10 minutes and a manager noticing us waiting to be seated.
After we were seated, our server came by to take our drink orders but did not fill our waters. He then disappeared and we asked several staff walking by for water and they all appeared confused and suggested we ask our server. We had already been served at least 2-3 meats by the time our server reappeared with our cocktails and we asked him for water. We got our cocktails 20 minutes after being seated and our water 5-10 minutes after that. Somewhat confusingly, our waiter brought us glasses of water instead of using the pitcher to fill up the water glasses already on the table (as he did for every other table we saw him serve).
We also noticed halfway through our meal that other waiters, including ours, were placing silver trays of sides on every other table as they greeted them and poured their water. We didn’t get those, so had to inquire about them and didn’t receive them until at least 45 minutes after we were seated.
To their credit, and the reason for the half star, a manager seemed to notice the service issue and kept checking on us, but it never seemed to be resolved.
Food: 4. The food was very good overall. We were able to try most of the mains, except for one of the rib types, the Parmesan drummettes, and the honey grilled cheese (disappointing as we did want to try this.)
For us, the standouts were undoubtedly the flank steak, both lamb dishes, and the pork sausage. Sadly, though, the biggest disappointment was the filet (which should have been the star). We waited all meal to try this, but it tasted like it was marinated in liquid smoke—I actually couldn’t finish the piece I was served (a first for me and filet!) and my boyfriend finished it for me, although he also noted the smoke taste. I was also a little surprised at how much of the meat offered was well done—although I recognize that others like it well done, we prefer it on the medium rare side. As a result, we ended up declining a lot of what was offered and had to wait a bit longer for our preferred temperature to come by.
Drink-wise, we both had caipirinhas, which were great flavor-wise the first time around. Our second round (which we ordered halfway through the meal but didn’t receive until after we had been served all but one meat, see service above) seemed heavier on the ice and lighter on the cocktail, but it was still good.
Overall: 3 with great potential. For now, I’m chalking up the service issues to growing and learning pains with new staff. I’d love to see this place succeed as it is definitely our kind of place, but I’m not sure we’d keep making the trip out there and spending that kind of money without better service and...
Read moreRio Brazil Steakhouse has been open for a month hosting lots of guests we have seen while driving by. Located in the new Wigwam Crossing shopping center, there is plenty of parking near the entrance. Our first experience was an early Thursday evening reservation. This style of restaurant is not common in Richmond, and some may be unfamiliar, read on. The restaurant interior is attractive, and cavernous, with lofty ceilings, a marbled wall, warm wood, a large marbled bar, darkened windows and divided by a huge glass wall wine rack. Tables and seats are comfortable and formally set with linen tablecloths, napkins, hefty meat knives, and smaller plates. There is a large open patio off the bar that could be a fun option during temperate weather. The tables are filled with large parties, families, and couples during our meal and the vibe and noise level build as well.
There is a full selection of Brazilian-inspired handcrafted cocktails, super premium spirits, beer, and a strong wine program in a broad, reasonable price range. Three side items arrive upon seating: Brazilian cheese bread, fried bananas, and polenta fries. The food menu options are rodízio style (all-you-can-eat in-house for a fixed price) in three tiers from $25 to $45. Included is a self-serve inviting cold bar with a unique array of fresh salads, vegetables, fruit, dressings, shrimp salad, charcuterie, and cheese. Also included is a self-serve hot bar with soup, potatoes three ways, black beans, and jasmine rice.
The polenta and fried banana were good, the bread was dry, not cheesy tasty, or warm. Everything we sampled from the two market bars was well prepared, presented, and delicious. For the namesake main attraction, most of the meats offered to our table by the authentically dressed gauchos (meat waiters) were overcooked, dry, lukewarm, or room temperature for my liking. I later thought because of our early reso, they may have been reheated from the previous evening. The exception was the lamb chops, which we waited a few minutes to be prepared. They were hot, juicy, and delicious. The sausages were plump, hot, and juicy too. I was disappointed in the regional popular picanha. I wish I had accepted a few bites of grilled pineapple as a palate cleanser too as palate fatigue set in (the gauchos didn’t explain the purpose). As the restaurant filled toward the end of our meal, I noticed more skewers held glistening, fresh hot out of the roaster meats.
It's really good value and fun if you eat larger portions in one sitting and enjoy choosing exactly what's on your plate over the course of a meal. They are generous and you will not leave hungry. I don't eat much in a short sitting, selected accordingly, but still had a few prime bites left on the two small plates that were never filled once. Continuous dining concepts don't typically offer a leftover box since unfortunately, it would be subject to abuse by a few, but it was disappointing to see the last few bites I would have enjoyed later as a late-night snack go to waste. I observed a lot of food cleared as waste from other tables. Challenging to balance these facts with the concept. I didn’t check but I hope they may offer an a la carte small bites menu at the bar when you don't want to waste food or spend a minimum of $25 for food only, especially for lunch. Extensive dessert selections are priced a la carte and can be boxed to go.
The service was warm, friendly, and overall excellent. For my dining experience, not a complaint, but a bit overly attentive or interactive style for a relaxing meal. Understandably, this is expected at a churrascaria, especially with the roving gauchos serving multiple slices of meat one at a time. You can control some interruptions with limited success by remembering to flip the coasters on your table from red to green. Owners are highly engaged and make this a promising rising local dining choice for north Richmond and the Hanover area, a literal finer dining desert. viva! saúde!...
Read moreI just want to say we USED to be Texas De Brazil fans. It was our go-to Rodizio place since there’s really no other choices to go around here. That all went downhill the last few years. Before they closed, it wasn’t the same when their manager Jeovane left that location in Norfolk. Yes, there’s one in Newport News but that’s not even worth mentioning because that place is well, not for us… I’m sure others like it but it’s absolutely no comparison.
We drove 70 miles to try out this new Rodizio restaurant here in Glen Allen. I have to tell you it was definitely worth the drive. So happy we found this place! The restaurant is in a new development. Great location, easy to find.
The staff was very friendly and it was completely packed! Granted, we came here on Valentine’s Day, one of the busiest days of the year for dining. The restaurant is divided into two rooms and is completely open and bright. Wine Enthusiasts will love the atmosphere here seeing all the wines on the wall. It is wine country in this area, after all.
One of the few highlights is the beef ribs. They roll them out in a cart, which is shown in my video, one of the Gauchos is there to cut up pieces for you to your liking. The ribs are cooked for over 18+ hours, makes them so tender. It's definitely my favorite & worth waiting for. They also serve rack of lamb and lamb chops…btw they don’t charge you extra like Texas de Brazil started doing. Beef, Pork, Chicken, Lamb, Salmon are being served every evening.
The pão de queijo (cheese bread) is definitely one of the best I had. Please don’t change the recipe! I spoke to the chef and he makes it in-house and confirmed that they don’t get it elsewhere frozen.
The Salad Bar area is a meal in its own. If you are a vegetarian or don’t partake in beef/meat products you can have just that. There is plenty to choose from. So many selections that you can definitely be satisfied.
We also had the pleasure of meeting with both owners and one of their wives that evening. One of them was once a soccer player in Brazil. They mentioned that they hope to open many more of this restaurant all over. This is the first in Virginia, and the next will be in Virginia Beach, which will be closer to us and we cannot wait to visit that location!
Overall, we were satisfied with our experience. One of the best we’ve had in a while. We have been in a couple of high-end restaurants in Chesapeake & Norfolk and it was awful. It’s invigorating to go to a restaurant we can...
