Went to the Ne state fair; spent the night in Grand Island, and needed a place to eat dinner. My friend and I are always looking for a great place to eat while supporting the "Mom and Pops" in an unfamiliar town. We did our usual Google search and came across Tommy's. I had been craving fried chicken, and that was the first thing I seen on the menu. We got there and the place looked like an old school diner, which I thought was neat. The waitress was nice, accommodating, but not overbearing. I had the fried chicken (obviously) and my friend, the chicken fried steak. Her steak was the typical chicken fried steak (really can't screw it up too much). Her mash potatoes were real; so that was cool. My chicken was fried well. The batter was the thickness of "original recipe" but the crispness of "extra crispy." The meat was very juicy. The seasonings were the basic salt and pepper, but it was soooooo good. Mac and Cheese was good. It was creamy and cheesy but basic in flavor. The shocker for me was when we asked about the pie. My friend wanted the strawberry rhubarb. I wasn't going to order any because I'm not a fan of sweets, but I noticed on the menu they had a "Sour cream and raisin." Wth!!! We discussed it a minute, and joked a while. Could not imagine the combination. Finally we asked the waitress about it. I mean, it's on the menu so someone likes it right? So we ordered it. OMGosh. That was such an amazing piece of pie. I'm not a fan of meringue, but the pie itself was incredible! My friend loved it with the meringue. Sour cream and raisins, who knew. If you find yourself in Grand Island and want a relaxed atmosphere without settling for fast food, you have to stop in at Tommy's. Order the Sour cream and raisin pie. You...
Read moreWe had great food without much of a wait and our server Bill was very attentive. Unfortunately, two different servers (Donald and a female whose name was not embroidered on her shirt) ruined the night for us. It was heartbreaking to hear them harassing Bill both behind his back and to his face about doing something incorrectly on the computer system. When Bill kindly asked to be shown how to correct his mistake, they continued to laugh at him and make fun of him while walking throughout the restaurant. What I find even more disheartening is that this is not the first incident in which I have witnessed these two individuals degrading Bill.
I'll gladly be waited on by Bill any day of the week, but I will politely decline being served by these other two individuals. I will also be reporting this incident to Tommy tomorrow as he was not on the...
Read moreLooking for somewhere to eat breakfast. Was not interested in the fast food choices or chains available. Tommy's was the only restaurant in the area. Read the reviews, has a pretty high rating. However the negative reviews were a concern, but decided to try it myself and see if improvements made. Plus there weren't any other choices. Ordered a western omelet. I asked for cheese because I saw reviews that said they don't include cheese in their omelets, so be sure to ask for it. Omelet came with two slices of cheese plopped on top. Had to fold the cheese into the omelet so it would melt. Omelet was salty. The grits were NOT cooked, inedible. Pancakes were ok.
How they have such a high rating, is a mystery. And no, I won't be calling Tommy's Restaurant to discuss. Make some changes. There's enough negative reviews that...
