Iâm quite critical, typically, on my food reviews but Iâm here to say that everything I ordered was great. I grew up in the rural Midwest (southern Illinois) and lived in the South for much of my adult life â so this type of food is very very familiar to me. Iâve eaten it, cooked it, and bought it in restaurants (âmeat & threesâ) hundreds of times. Today I tried the mashed potatoes, white gravy, Lima beans, pea salad, coleslaw, turkey and dressing, cheese pie, and banana cream pie. The turkey was my least favorite part. Just not much going on. The cornbread dressing was slightly underseasoned for me but moist. But all of the sides were great. Nothing from a can (except maybe the Lima beans, but they were creamy on the inside and delicious!) When making this kind of food in large quantities, many places like this cut corners and/or season it like hospital food. Almost everything was perfectly seasoned just as if I had made it myself. My favorite probably was the pea salad! The coleslaw was a bit limp but had a delicious homemade dressing. The potatoes were real, and seasoned pretty well â although I didnât find the white gravy to have much taste. The pies were both good. I had to try the cheese pie, never having heard of it before. Turns out it is just cheesecake filling in a pie crust. Nothing wrong with it but for some reason not what I was expecting. The banana cream pie was good as well. Next time I will try the custard pie. It looked soooooooo good but obviously couldnât justify three pieces of pie! My only other complaint, I have to say, were the prices. It was pretty high for what kind of food it is and the atmosphere. I spent $32 for one entree, four sides, and two desserts â a lot of food, I understand, but the extra sides were $4 each and the pie I believe was $6 a slice. A little steep. But I would go back again in a heartbeat to try some of their other offeringsâŚand I will, for sure! The staff was friendly and helpful. Now, if you will excuse me I am going to go dig in to some of...
Read moreWe came here after mass and it wasn't very busy, but the dine in was available. My wife had chicken dumplings, twice baked potatoes & green beans. I had roast beef & twice baked potatoes. My granddaughter had the fried chicken & a roll. It was good, but the chicken was only warm not hot. My only other problem is they don't give you a receipt, so I'm unsure what I'm charged, except the total, next time I'm going to ask for a receipt. I suspicious of a place that don't give you a receipt, it has no effect on the food, just 1 of my weird quirks. If your in the area I would suggest trying this place. The owner did contact me and told me if I want a receipt just ask, most people don't want them, so they don't waste the paper. It makes sense, so I changed...
Read moreJerryâs catered my wedding (135 people) in Alton last weekend. Honestly I didnât consider any other caterers. As soon as I became engaged, my fiancĂŠ and I knew that we would only trust Jerryâs. EVERYTHING was perfect! The food was fresh, hot, and so wonderfully flavorful. They have several levels of catering available to meet most everyoneâs needs. My guests had MORE than enough to eat and they raved about the food. The staff were absolutely wonderful as wellâmaking sure everything stayed stocked and hot. They were very kind to my guests and very accommodating. Even though I visit the restaurant regularly, this exceeded my expectations and made my day that much...
