We had a cheese pizza, buffalo chicken pizza with half sweet and spicy sauce and half fiery sauce, corn dogs with fries, fried mushrooms, and a Dawgwood sub.
I give the pizza a 4/5 I liked it a pretty good amount. It reminded me of cafeteria pizza in style but was cooked better/hotter and had higher quality ingredients. This was kind of a nice touch since I don't have pizza that reminds me of cafeteria pizza often at restaurants and when I do it usually sucks because it's cafeteria pizza, so this was kind of a delightful little quality for me. Cheese pizza was solid, buffalo chicken pizza was also really good but did need bacon, red onions, and banana peppers added to be a great buffalo pizza. With these additions it really got there though, although the sweet heat was a tad too sweet.
The Dawgwood sandwich was the signature sandwich which is why I ordered it. The bread on this sandwich was great but it was weird and not appropriate that the cold cuts inside were cold. They should have been cooked too, and this sandwich was too dry. It really needs a sweet & sour dressing drizzled over the veggies to make it pop in my opinion. Just ok overall on the sandwich, 3/5.
Breaded mushrooms were standard bagged & frozen, 3/5.
Service was really good. The owner came over and talked to us which was pretty enjoyable, and while I'm on the topic of the staff our server was a gorgeous pregnant young lady who seemed to enjoy her work a great deal and was a very pleasant & fun server, and our drinks were never empty. We were seated quickly and everyone was the right amount of professional and personable. I give the staff a 5/5.
So seems like all things considered I'm going with a 4, and I'd consider driving all the way to Carroll for Shirky's again. We make the hike this time on a recommendation from a friend, and if this were local I'd be very willing to stop...
Read moreGlad I expanded my search for pizza places to further out into Southeast Columbus. Shirky's is wonderful. Nestled in what looks like uptown Carrol Ohio, it's a carryout and bar - didn't visit the bar just placed a carryout order.
Staff was extremely nice, even chatted it up and made some welcome recommendations while I was waiting for my pickup order.
Ordered a medium mushroom pizza, medium buffalo chicken dip pizza, large pepperoni and onion pizza, gluten free pepperoni pizza, an order of wings with garlic sauce, an order of fried pickles, and an Italian sub. All of that was $68, which is quite reasonable.
The pizzas were similar to other Columbus/Midwest style pizza and had flavorful sauce, cooked to perfection, and excellent toppings. It reminded me of pizza that's a little thicker than Classic's. Their buffalo chicken dip pizza was very unique and delicious.
Sister in law is intolerant to gluten and got the gluten free pepperoni, she said it was one of the better gluten free pizzas she's had - crust was thicker than most gluten free crusts and the pepperoni was the smaller cupped old world.
The Italian sub was good, wouldn't say top 5 or anything, but still tasty. The fried pickles weren't chips, but rather slices of Spears with a bit of spice, and were very good. Wings were average.
Overall I'd give the pizza a 4.8 out of 5, the appetizers and sub a 4.5 out of 5 and the wings a 4 out of 5.
Because of how good the pizza was, the reasonable prices, and the friendliness of the staff I've rounded up to a 5 since Google doesn't allow...
Read moreShirkey's pizza has the pepperoni on top making the spicy rounds get a little crispy around the edges while not over-cooking the centers. Pieces are cut square. The crust is a little thinner than (pizza hut's) hand-tossed but not a cracker crust. Hits the sweet spot in between. Sausage is in tasty, large crumbles. Tomato sauce is a marinara-style with clear tomato flavor and basil notes rather than heavy oregano or a smoky garlic flavor. My family swears by the sub sandwiches but I am a loyal pizza fan so I can't give a first-hand review of those. Shirkey's has revamped the menu at this local hangout - although they've been in town long enough that only longtime residents would call them the new management. The pizzas have been consistently well baked and fresh toppings since they purchased the premises. I have been getting Pizza from this location for forty years and the present management has done an outstanding job of improving the overall quality of the food. The addition of fried brownie bites, though, means you have to leave room for dessert. You won't leave the table hungry or...
