The Road Runner Pub — Restaurant in Haddam

We went to Phantom Burgers but it was complete chaos. I had never been to Road Runners but it has good reviews. So 3 minutes away we came here. Quiet. Good background music. We are from NY and felt a lower east side vibe with the grates on the windows as if we’re were in a lower level.. What really impressed us was the floors. Old but immaculate. So clean. The server/bar maid was sweet and so happy to hear we were happy. We both had burgers . Cooked perfectly. The fries were also good. So many places you can taste cold grease. Not here. The pour of wine was good. We will definitely be back. I don’t give out 5 stars often. But Road runners really impressed us for a small bar in the quiet town of Higganum. I have to add that after posting my review I read another. They called it a townie bar and thought they were being looked at. That was my concern coming here. Didn’t happen to us. Best bar in the road. The food is good the Bartenders are very nice and knowledgeable. It has a big enough bar to accommodate a good number of customers. And. Few tables as well.. handicap accessible. Plentiful parking in the back and roadside parking too. I live in East Haddam and I take the ride over because, I'm not a fan of The guy that owns the hilltop, Crossroads, Brookside. And he owns one other bar on your way out to Hebron. I guess I'll be kinda nice and won't name them all. He never has everything that is on the menu. He is bringing foods / cooked foods from place to place serving it saying its fresh in house made. I can 100% a test to the fact that he is marrying bottles with the cheapest alternative. And if you do order no one in the kitchen can read or understand English so it will come out wrong. I hate to be a downer, but I have no idea why this is so highly rated. This has the feel of a townie bar, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (although in this case it kinda is). We figured we'd give it a shot and were disappointed.

The food is decent. Not amazing, but nothing inherently wrong with it either. We arrived on a Friday night and it was dead. There were a couple of guys drinking at the bar, but no one was eating dinner. I would think that if it's a 4.5+ star establishment it would be packed, not dead.

The other patrons seemed to be giving us the evil eye the whole time we were there (not sure if it was because we weren't regulars or something else). We certainly didn't feel welcome.

That said the server/bartender was pleasant and super welcoming, so there is nothing to complain about in regard to the staff.

The bottom line is that this is a solid bar with some slightly upscale beers (all IPAs), and decent pub fare for food. I think if an establishment has a 4.5+ star review I have higher expectations and it fails...
