Been eating at Haltom Chinese for 33 years and they taste like "Home" to me... I can't remember a time without the wonderful gentleman who takes orders happily answering their to-go phone with a cheerful "Haltom Chinese!! How can I help youuuuu?" So yeah, after 3 decades maybe I'm a bit biased but here's some of the reasons I love this restaurant so much.
-Unlike many Chinese restaurants whose fried chicken is often soggy, "off tasting," and mostly gristle Haltom Chinese seems to use a higher quality cut of chicken. The batter/coating seems different from most restaurants too, because it does not have the thick "bread like" coating under the crispy shell which usually just ends up soggy... The batter at Haltom Chinese is more like a thin veneer of delicious crackling crispy coating. Ask them for extra crispy double fry and be amazed at how incredibly crispy your food arrives even after a steamy time on the delivery drive.
-They also use a nicer type of wonton wrapper than you find at most Chinese places. It's much thinner and more delicate, creating a perfect balance of wrapper and filling for the wonton soup and fried wontons alike. You can always judge a Chinese place by it's wonton wrapper, and Haltom Chinese is miles above every place we've tried in that category.
-The egg rolls are unique as well, in their shape and filling. The cabbage is always sliced in the perfect "angel hair" thickness without any large distracting stems, and the egg roll is made slightly wider than your typical frozen fare so that there is very little overlapping wrapper to cause that unpleasant gummy texture so many egg rolls have when wrapped too tightly without enough filling. They also seem to use the same delicate wonton wrapper for these, and it makes such a difference for the overall egg roll experience.
I've tried almost everything on the menu but these days we always order the same things and are never disappointed- Fried wontons, beef strips, a large wonton soup, Hong Kong Chicken (another Haltom Chinese specialty that I never see on other menus), sweet and sour pork (again, very crispy thin coating and an excellent cut of pork on this, definitely from a higher grade supplier), and the always amazing Chef Special String Bean Szechuan Style which are consistently that perfect tender crisp texture and coated in the most decadent glossy savory spicy sauce you'll find anywhere.
This extravagant feast usually costs about $50 excluding the tip, but the portions are so large it's enough for two people to eat a second time, which honestly makes the price seem quite reasonable. (Pro tip- reheat your fried goodies in the oven/toaster oven and they'll come out almost as crispy and good as the day before!)
I know there are some bad reviews out there, but my experiences with Haltom Chinese throughout my life have always been a pleasant and happy time. We have made lots of great memories of lunches there at the restaurant and at home with friends and family, and look forward making more in the years to come.
Long live Haltom...
Read moreI want to know who this place paid to give such positive reviews because the food we received wasn't even worthy of the 1 star this review is giving.
This place is the worst Chinese food I've had. The people praising this place are why there are trust issues...
Read moreLet me start by saying I have been a fan of the quality and service of this restaurant for close to ten years. I know in the last few months they have had no driver available when I have called to order for delivery. Tonight I order three entrees and two appetizers ( and no hooowww can I help yyyoooooouuuuu personally experience I am used too) I asked if it had changed ownership. The guy said it was only a new system. I thought the total was more than usual but was completely surprised to get a text saying my door dash driver was on the way. Okay it took twice as long to be delivered which is fine, but the restaurant charged me ten dollar more that the door dash!!!! (And I tipped ten in cash). The totals don’t match… Really!!! Dishonest and misleading. I also only received one large rice for three entrees. Although the food is still amazing and high quality. I am extremely disappointed with the customer service and lack of transparency. I’m not sure I will be a loyal...
