When you know what you’re looking for…it will often elude you. When you have no idea what you seek…it will ironically find you. In this life like soup…may every bowl be a bowl of good.
My morning aspirations were simple. Get coffee…but when I arrived at the place I googled…I immediately noticed another place right next door with the right combination of words as it’s name. “Bowl of Good”. It spoke to me….I listened and made my way inside to what appeared to be a very sterile…almost chain restaurant looking interior. Everything was in the right place. I realized I too was in the right place when I got a look at the menu and fridge area. The most clean and creative ensemble of ingredients one could imagine. I ordered a few coffees and a smattering of dishes ranging from eggs w/ sausage to quesadillas and a loaded up rice/egg bowl thingy. It tasted like it was prepared by the hands of mythical food gods. So fresh…so vibrant with flavors that complimented each other like a good plate mate. They also have a large fridge with pre-prepared food that looked magnificently wonderful.
This place had a mission for sure and I believe it to be serving a community sensational creations out of a supersized Bowl of Good. Bring that to any table and you will always have patrons for your portions. Thanks for reading and I hope this guides someone in the right direction. Read moreI have been enjoying A Bowl of Good for over a decade now. I love their little grab and go chia puddings, and after my first child was born their pre-made dishes in the refrigerator section kept my family fed through that big life transition. I have really happy memories of sitting in ABOG on cold winter days, cozy with some soup, and watching light flurries come down outside. I loved getting their cold brew when it was available. But what really got me hooked was the Saigon tofu gyro, called the bahn mi back in the day. IT IS SO GOOD. I no longer live a mile away- I live over a hundred miles away, and I make the trip up to Harrisonburg about twice a year to shop at Gift & Thrift and eat at A Bowl of Good- I need my good tofu gyro fix!!! Sadly, though, during my last visit in October, an alternative brunch menu was all I could choose from on a Saturday. I couldn't get my chips and had to get my gyro in deconstructed bowl form. Better than nothing, but not the usual fix. I'm returning Saturday and hoping things are back to normal so I can have my gyro and chips!! Fingers crossed. Please consider making this available on Saturdays....
Read moreWhen I lived in Harrisonburg a few years ago, this was one of my favorite places to eat. Sadly, I moved away in 2018, but when I finally got the opportunity to visit today, I was delighted at the opportunity to eat here again. And it did not disappoint! I used to order the Banh Mi with tofu rather than chicken. That is not on the menu anymore, but I can confirm that the Saigon Gyro is basically the same thing - at least from memory it is. It is so good! I have spent the last few years chasing down this exact gyro in many other cities, but nothing ever comes close to this for me. The slaw, the perfectly seasoned tofu, the Thai sauce, the pillowy gyro... It's a whole experience for me and I'm so glad it's still there, waiting! I was also super happy at how little has changed at Bowl of Good. I recognized many familiar employee faces, and everyone was so very kind. I will definitely be back for more gyros. Thanks Bowl of Good! P.S. my kids enjoyed their rice and beans and my husband enjoyed...
