The great: You get a very generous scoop here, and the ice cream is good. We had ice cream at four different businesses during our trip, and all of them were either good or very good. Schoolhouse is good. What keeps it from being very good or great? The ice cream selection is a variety of single flavors with what amount to a variety of mix ins. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not the sort of thing that makes me remember the ice cream, or makes me want to return. Vanilla with oreo or vanilla with cookie dough is really just vanilla with different mixins. How about some lavender or squid ink ice cream? Also, I detest the cash-only policy. Who carries cash? Being charged usurious fees to withdraw from an ATM on the premises is not an option I find remotely appealing. As a business my guess is the workers are seeing less in tips, not more, because after paying three bucks just to access my money, I am now loathe to part with more of it for tips. Install a dang POS machine and charge me the stupid fee if you need to, but I am FAR MORE likely to then tack on 20-25 percent tip for the kids than to scrape off a ten spot because that’s all that I have after taking money out of the ATM and paying the bill. It’s completely inconvenient. Adding to that are the kitschy signs telling us not to be “crab”by, or a $5 charge for whining (this is on top of the ATM fee perhaps)? It seriously soured my mood- and dude I was getting ice cream! That said, if you care about getting your money’s worth, you’re going to get bigger portions here than at the other well known scoop shops in Massachusetts. I knocked down for atmosphere due to the silly ATM fees and signage, otherwise it’s perfectly fine as a scoop shop goes. Warning, parking in the small set of spaces off hwy28 might box you in when someone...
Read moreLast weekend, we dropped by Schoolhouse to try their icecream for the first time. The moment our icecream was handed to each of us (party of 4), it was melting and within minutes it was melting a lot.... like dripping everywhere. Different scoop flavors melted into each other immediately, ruining the flavor of each. As we were mopping up our cones and cups, we looked around and noticed that every patron was having the exact same problem--- it was somewhat comical to watch--- but more annoying and disappointing (and a stcky mess). The freezer cases must have been at the wrong temperature, and no one bothered to monitor it and adjust. Not sure how any staff member didn't notice the icecream carnage happening right in front of them. The melting issue kept us from being able to taste how good the icecream might have been. Thought this was a one off occasion.... but my kids went there today and experienced the same thing--- the...
Read moreMy family took a quick trip to the cape yesterday. We visited some friends, grabbed lunch and saw some sights. We finished the day by grabbing an ice cream at The Schoolhouse on our way out of town. This was my first time there and we loved it! It was clean, charming and delicious. The ice cream was super creamy and my Coffee Oreo was tasty and bursting with Oreos! Next time I want to try the Kahlua Crunch. The staff was very friendly and we even chatted with the owners. We visit the area often, so this is our new spot for ice cream. I told all my friends about it when we got home. You won’t be disappointed! They even had a healthy supply of to go containers so you can bring some back to your family! BEST ICE CREAM ON...
