I stopped in because I was excited to taste coffee that was grown in Hamakua District. I have always preferred Ka'u coffee to that grown in Kona, but honestly, I think Hamakua is my new favorite! I got a cappuccino that may have been the very best I've ever tasted. This Hamakua coffee had the same smoothness as Ka'u, but the flavor was much more complex. It was deep and rich with fruity and earthy undertones. It was amazing! No bitterness, acidity or after taste. I highly recommend giving it a try!

Heading to study the ancient civilizations of the Waipio Valley today and Ian’s fine Hamakua grown and processed coffee sets up the perfect launch. Well the Valley road is quite a hike down the steepest public road anywhere, so it might be easier to just enjoy my Papaaloa Joe from the visitor viewpoint 8 miles down the road and let the Valley keep it’s secrets Charles H.

Ian, aka, "Papa Joe" was the grower, roaster, and proprietor of this coffee place. He treated a tourist like an old friend. He's a small farm coffee grower with a passion for his craft and at the same time seems to genuinely enjoy meeting people. You have to stop by to say hi to Ian - but you need to stay for the coffee, because it was DELICIOUS. :-)

Being from Seattle and having visited the big island multiple times, we enjoy coffee. We have even tried most of the coffee places on the big island. Yet, Papa’aloa Joe Coffee is, to this day, one of the best coffee joints we have ever happened upon. The owner roasts his own beans and is super kind. All our specialty drinks were outstanding and our bag of fresh roasted beans were amazingly enjoyable the week after our visit to Papa’aloa Joe’s. If you have a chance to try this coffee, do it! We all are still thinking about how good it was...

The coffee was amazing. The girl behind the counter had all her focus on the customer before us, so we took our time, looked at the little merch shelves/plants, browsed the menu. When it was our turn, she put her entire focus on us and was SO friendly, thoughtful, and kind. We both got the paniolo, which really is worth all these reviews mentioning it. Also, bought some local honey with comb-in. Super tasty! 🤗

Very cute little part of town, lots of shops along the corridor (though most don't open until...
