If you are traveling anywhere within 100 miles of Hazelton, you simply must must must enjoy a meal at Zacosayu Tacos! The interior is really small, with only a table for 2, a table for 4, and counter seats for 3. But you aren't going for ambiance, you are going for flavor and authenticity, two things that are overflowing in abundance at this little spot.

The menu is just perfect in terms of size, variety, and customizability. The staff is attentive to all your needs too, and make sure you order what you actually want. I ordered a carnitas burrito and was immediately asked if I wanted everything it came with. We went over my options and I was grateful for such attention to detail. Our pescatarian teenager custom ordered some meatless tacos without problem. And my wife had a great conversation at the register about taco recommendations and sauce suggestions. It's like being at Mom's house and she goes out of her way to make all her kids happy, no matter what was in her original meal plan for the night.

I watched as they prepared my burrito on the griddle and I knew I was in for a special meal. They started by putting huge portions of cheese right on the flattop. Then the tortilla on top. A short while later, the chef picked up the tortilla and the cheese was gooily all stuck to the tortilla, none to the griddle. She then added the rice, refried beans, lettuce, and carnitas. Wrapped up, griddled some more and my burrito was stuffed to the brim, bursting with flavor, and perfectly crispy on the outside.

The refried beans were some of the best I ever tasted. The rice was wonderful and the lettuce added some crispness to the inside. But the star of the show was the carnitas. They were absolutely divine, succulent, flavorful, and plenty of other positive adjectives. Melt in your mouth deliciousness.

My wife got two tacos, one of which was Al Pastor. She described it as one of the best Al Pastors she has ever had. We're thirty minutes from the restaurant now and she's still raving about it. And our teenagers tacos got great reviews too, especially the cheese which looked toasted and crispy as if it was prepared straight on the griddle for the perfect amount of time.

The staff made the service wonderful, with the attention to detail I mentioned previously and also with taking the time to chat with us and the other patrons about the food, how we found the place, etc. They were just oozing with warmth and kindness and it just added to an already amazing experience.

As for ambiance, it's a tight place without much room for more. A little messy behind the counter with what looks like some unused equipment just taking up space. Tidy that up and it'll improve the look and feel of the place significantly. The restaurant has speakers and were playing Carin Leon for the whole meal, which the patrons next to us were singing along to. That gave such a good vibe to the experience too. And the sign hanging outside the bathroom is warm and endearing. You will feel good eating at Zacosayu Tacos, that's for sure.

I really can't believe that after living on the Mexican boarder in Texas for a year and in California (also near the Mexican border) for a combined 17 years that it would take me going to Hazleton, PA to find the absolute best birria tacos I have ever had! The two ladies responsible for this event were super friendly and accommodating to a couple of menu special requests. The flavor of the birria and consume for the tacos was so good I drank the consume as a soup at the end. The meat was so tender and flavorful. The asada torta and caramel crepe was fantastic as well. I am only in town for two days and was hugely disappointed that they are closed on Sundays (not a criticism!) for me to get a second round of birria tacos. No question I'll go...
