Rustlers made it into the Top 25 of our 1000 BBQ Places to Eat At In Oklahoma Before You Die!
Located just north of I-40 on the Eastside of town, you know it's going to be good before you even arrive. Anytime your GPS tells you to "turn off the paved road" heading to a restaurant, you know it's legit. (Ok, the road is paved, but it's Industrial Road, and there are asphalt millings in the parking lot, and there's an RV Park...)
Rustlers has a variety of meat on the menu, and everything from sandwiches to poundage available. So I decided to try the best of both worlds, the Big Jake sandwich -- sliced brisket, turkey, pulled pork, and a hot link, with pepper jack cheese on toasted sourdough bread. Big is right! Somewhere between a half and a full pound of meat was falling out of my sandwich.
It comes with chips, and there are a slew of sides available, but two words on the menu stopped me in my tracks: cheese curds. When you go, order some, and thank me later.
My food arrived quickly, although the presentation was a little haphazard 🙂 . At first I was concerned that the dozen or so cheese curds for $6 might have been a little over priced, but then I ate one. Then seven. These things were deep fried chunks of cheese heaven. Definitely worth ordering! The only thing better was dipping them in sauce...speaking of which, it is served "farm style" from what appears to be a giant calf bottle (it's actually an industrial sauce dispenser). Hot or mild, pile some on. Both are great--thick, nice flavor, with a little lingering heat and a little kick.
The Big Jake was everything it was billed as-- a pile of meat on Texas toast size sourdough slices. The sliced brisket was...amazing. Like top three on my list delicious. Moist, great bark, lots of flavor without the sodium overload. Hints of smoke without over powering. While I didn't get the ribs, I can only imagine how fantastic those must be, if the brisket was an indication.
The pulled pork, smoked turkey and sausage were equally impressive, and while I am not a cheese with BBQ type, the pepper jack worked in this combo. Half a sandwich was enough of a meal, and I did have the beginning stages of meat sweats trying to finish it off. Plan to split a sandwich or take tomorrow's lunch and dinner home with you.
The service was prompt and friendly, but you're on your own for refills and such. Not that anyone eating there minded that fact, as we were all lost in meat paradise. And with plenty of seating options, you can go solo or bring a large group and find a place to sit.
They also have a Wagyu Burger on the menu that sounds delicious...and they do pizzas...so it looks like a return trip...
Read moreTHIS IS THE PLACE! This establishment is a terrific representation of a great restaurant operated by friendly professional and caring staff. It's always a good sign when the manager (If I recall correctly, I think that it was Steve) follows-up greeting and inquiring with customers at their dinning table. A na'uce dude. That's the Oklahoma style that's been lost in the evolution and progression, and it's wonderful to see it revived at this-hure eatery! Best of all, of cOUrse, is the grub. Great BBQ that's quickly earning a reputation as one of the NATION'S best smoked meat joints. Smoked pecan pies too! Try it, it's good. The prices are competitive and a fair value for the load of meat that's served. The environment is also a fabulous representation of what a Okie Bar-'b-Que rest-aur'ant OUght to look like, with lots of custom rOUgh milled lumber and tables that just look as if real men made em. The decor is appropriate and certainly adds to the ambiance of a BBQ rest-aur'ant. It's a dinning experience & far from typical. And, just in case someone thinks that they can tackle a real Okie sized portioned sandwich, Rustler's offers "The Fatboy Special" which typically remedies every bit of the ole hunger "pangs", however it's not fur the weak of heart. Sissies beware. Thure fixin's are ever-bit as good as them-there entrees being smoked & carved up. The sauce is superb. It's a smart location about a half mile north of I-40. They like classic vehicles, bikers, families and veterans. My prediction is that this restaurant will do as well as they want to, and we the patrons stand to benefit the most. This place will become OUr reg'u'lar stop when we travel in the eastern portion of the great state of Oklahoma, where "it's all abOUt the people," and the Bar-B-Que. Highly recommended with a...
Read moreThe young lady working the counter, greeted us with a welcoming smile. We ordered two of Rustler’s, 1 Meat Meals: ¼ lb. pulled pork, two sides (Fried Okra and Baked Beans), Texas Toast, a pickle and a ring of red onion. Order and pay at the counter; your food is delivered to the table. The air in the restaurant has a pleasant smoke aroma that combines with the décor of rustic rough-cut wood, rusty barn tin and a few beers signs, to give it a distinctive BBQ Joint feel. Surprisingly and thankfully, Classic 70s Rock music playing on the sound system. No, "dang me, twang me, they ought’a take a rope and hang me,” C&W music. A couple of big screen TVs with my favorite custom car TV series on one and Guy Feri doing the Diners Drive Ins and Dives on another. I would bet you a cold beer that NASCAR dominates all of the screens on weekends during the racing season. The restaurant is spotless clean and comfortable. The food, some of the best BBQ and sides that I have had in Oklahoma. Noticeable freshness for every item on the paper lined aluminum tray. It is NOT okra season in Oklahoma, but you would be challenged to distinguish this from fresh. Fresh taste, fresh from the fryer, with the perfect light cornmeal coating finished golden brown. The baked beans were of equal quality. Obviously made this morning. Beans, onion, bits of green pepper in a tangy tomato BBQ sauce. The lean tender lightly smoked pulled pork sealed the deal. This is some damn good BBQ!...
