Two of us. Eggs were delicious though mine were not cooked as requested. Toast was fine. Sausage and gravy were good. There were very little hash browns in my partner’s dish but they were entirely sufficient tasting. My bacon was charred in places but still overall was decent and I ate most of it.
It’s hard to determine the rating you give when the elements of the food stated above were good - and then there’s that one element of food and service that are so so bad - that you leave the place staggered by the entire encounter.
This server started out fine. I like my soda in one glass and the ice in the other - so I get plenty of ice - and she obliged. I’m incredibly straight forward from the get go that I’m very specific (I am Autistic) but I’m also very kind and respectful.
My American fries I asked for extra extra crispy - even briefly stating I don’t like mushy.
The food all felt like it took longer to arrive than we’d have anticipated - but, when you get things as ordered - so be it.
They arrived and they were extra greasy, pale, and mush.
Another server brought the food to us - I mentioned that I’d asked for them to be very very crispy. She offered to have them redone - at this point I should have just asked for them to be taken off the bill - given the time it took for everything to come to begin with - I’d be ready to leave before they arrive again.
Hindsight…
I was long since done eating and honestly just wanted to leave - before they arrived again.
The outer colour was a little more golden - maybe- but they were still a greasy mushy mess.
We asked for the bill and the original server asked if we wanted a to go container for the mush that had just arrived.
My partner politely said, no, you know they’re still not at all crispy, would you please just take them off the bill?
She slo-mo raised her head from the table she was clearing (or setting), did a neck and eye roll (I kid you not) and in pure disgust declared, no! I’m not taking those off, they’re crispy!
Which is the point at which my sense of reason and justice mixed with outrage kicked in… lol
I grabbed a few of them and held them up - squished them in my fingers for all to see (as she’d made her declaration loud enough for everyone to hear) done effortlessly and without a solidarity crunching sound.
“Yeah. SUPER crunchy, obviously! They’re MUSH!”
She turned and walked away without discussion or compromise.
We got our bill, waited for every cent of change, and far away from Hinckley and the Whistle Stop Cafe we went!
No. We do not recommend it.
Though the hipster trend of previous years to LOVE places with shitty attitudes, Eau de Grease in the air, and food served however damn well the hole in the wall dive wanted to serve it - this place might be for them.
PS
My partner is a ridiculously generous tipper ALWAYS (16 years and I recall ZERO exceptions) — I’m being sincere in that he tips incredibly generously and even when things aren’t great - his tip is.
Sixteen years I’ve never experienced him NOT tip. Until today.
Unless you count the mushed up potatoes on top of the check left on the table.
This server could have handled that far differently and knowing my partner he’d likely have extra ridiculously tipped her for being diplomatic and kind.
When we travel we love to give our business to local small businesses, we’re kind and generous people. Unfortunately there’s far too little of this in...
Read moreSo I have been here before and I notice today it had cars there so I decided to eat there when I walked in I noticed everyone was looking at me like I was out of place in this restaurant was like it was the 1950s so I finally got set and she rushed me on my order so I ordered the same as I did before when my food came she walked off and I noticed I didn’t have any silverware to spread my cold butter on my pancakes and I notice this time it was a small portion of potatoes so I’ll let the Server know and she chuckled so A man came set down next to me and said wow that looks really good I said yes as I was lifting my fork in there was a 10 inch hair in my food and he said oh my god that’s not yours I said Yep have a great day it just seemed from right away that I was not wanted there and it does have that feeling I’ve been in the restaurant business for 20 years and worked with three different chiefs as a sous chief and all types of cooking Anyone who eats at this restaurant is just as racist as the people that were there I will no longer eat there I would...
Read moreMy family and I where not impressed with the the length of time waiting for our food. People that came in after us where getting there food before us. At an hour after we ordered our food we asked the waitress why others had there food before us. She went to ask the cook what's going on. After a few minutes she came back to our table and said the cook was getting our food done in a few minutes. We wait and waited and finally got up and ask the waitress for our check for the two dinner salads and drinks.
We know it was not the waitress fault but the cooks. She was picking and choosing the smaller orders over the bigger ones. And she also said she didn't know what we were talking about.
Thank you to the elderly lwaitress as we was trying her best to fix the problem someone else created. She...
