Since Just Janice Cafe closed a few months ago, our new Sunday brunch designation became Cafe Amici (Ho-Ho-Kus). The outside seating, menu choices, service, and food quality have all been very enjoyable....until today. We arrived around 11:30AM to find the restaurant very quiet, with only 3 other tables filled. We ordered quickly, and the waitress, Heather, commented that she loves when tables know exactly what they want. About 15 minutes later only one of our meals came out. Heather said the other would be out in just a minute. Just a minute turned into just 15 minutes. I finished my entire meal and my partner's meal still hadn't arrived. We had to ask her again to check on the status...mind you the restaurant was at less than 50% capacity. The second plate was finally brought out, with no explanation or apology. The meal was tasty, as it usually is, but we were very disappointed at the pompous, cafe-free attitude exuded by our waitress. When it came time to get the check, both meals were still listed.
We always, always, always tip 20%+ tip and certainly don't look for handouts, but given the fact that we had become regular customers, and that my partner's dish came out 15 minutes later, I figured the waitress would have done the right thing by removing one of the meals. Not so much, though. When we told her it would have been appropriate to do so, she said she'd check with her manager. Upon her return, she said "the best I can do is a 10% discount". Not only was her attitude piss poor, but the fact that the manager didn't waive the meal (or come over to apologize) speaks VERY loudly about this restaurant's desire to please its [repeat] customers.
I strongly suggest avoiding this eatery. Just Janice should be reopening its doors very soon, and there is always the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn for a great meal. Based on other reviews, we're not the first to experience very poor...
Read moreI am writing for my husband and for me. I'll give it a "1" because itâs a cute place. Other than that, I would never go back there. We have wanted to try it for a long time, because the menu looked similar to The Plum and the Pear that my friend owned, but it was very disappointing. First, clearly they could not find our reservation. then in an empty restaurant they wanted to put us at the front door (it was 5:00). Although they put us somewhere else, the table wobbled and only when the waiter saw my husband attempting to place something under the leg did he come over to help, and we had to ask him to come back there more times. There wasnât a stitch of bread or anything else on n the table either before or during the meal???? Absolutely nothing on the table for someone to much on prior to the meal AT THOSE PRICES????? Seriously? The portions are ridiculously small. When my husband's dinner arrived, we both said "where's the rest of it?". It was clear there was something missing from the plate. No one ever came to our table to ask if we wanted fresh pepper or salt -- I had to ask for it. My Chicken Milanese was like a piece of old shoe leather â it was as hard as a rock â badly prepared. If you dropped it on the floor, it would have cracked into pieces. I was starving so I ate it, but it was just a dried out piece of chicken with a little â and I emphasize âlittleâ bit of arugula on top. Nice location but you couldn't drag me back. Nice wrapping and decently presented food, but definitely not worth the price or...
Read moreI've been living in this town to have seen several different establishments at this location, one of which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was parking in a spot in front of the establishment and a Cafe Amici staff member came out and stopped me to explain the parking rules and to ask that I not damage their tables outside which were taking up the entire sidewalk and nearly touching my car in the street. He was demeaning and extremely rude. The parking sign was 2 ft away so I can only imagine he assumed I could not read it. People in this town are actually quite cordial but it seems Cafe Amici is an exception.
Perhaps this was the result of 1 toxic staff member's actions. Nevertheless, I do not recommend Cafe Amici. There is a plethora of fine establishments in Ho ho kus and its neighboring towns with more space, better food, lower prices, and professionalism.
If needed, I will update...
