Nestled just 20 miles from New York City at the corner of East Franklin Turnpike and Sheridan Avenue, it housed members of the area’s founding family: the Zabriskies. The structure is believed to have been built in the 1790s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Ho-Ho-Kus (an abbreviation of a tribal term for “red cedar”) Inn & Tavern builds on its rich history, focusing on making it more casual. Modern infrastructure and amenities were interwoven through the establishment to comply with historical regulations. My partner, our friends, and I decided to have dinner last night as first-timers. Reservation was easily made via OpenTable for 5. Upon entering this spot for local and farm-fresh dining, we were greeted by the staff at the host station inside a cozy, multiple-story dining setup to host semi-private dining experiences in a multitude of quaint rooms and two bars. Our table was ready by the window at the Hermitage Room. The menu focused on simple, seasonal, and modern American cuisine. From starters, we decided on the Fiddlehead Salad, Calamari, Dozen Blue Point Oysters, and Tuna Tartare. As a main meal, we opted for Veal Cheesesteak Sandwich, Pan-Seared Black Bass, Diver Sea Scallops, Zabriskie Burger, and Crispy Long Island Duck Breast. Complimentary rolls with whipped butter started our meal. All dishes were prepared with fresh ingredients, care, and attention to detail. Each plate had its unique taste and was delicious. There was a small hiccup with one of the dishes ordered, and our server, Sebastian, fixed it. The staff was attentive, friendly, and accommodating. The price was comparable to the area. Each dining room had its own personality, and we enjoyed our dinner experience here, which we can recommend.

We just visited for Mother’s Day and unimpressed is the only way to describe our experience. The valet was strangely setup with unfriendly staff, getting to our reserved table was an absolute mess, and no one seemed to know what was going on. I will say, however, that some customers were flat out rude to the staff right off the bat because of a reservation mixup. The biggest disappointment was the food. I asked for a minor change to my original meal (sunny side up egg to a fried egg) and the kitchen said no, so I decided on something else. I was shocked to say the least when I ordered the American breakfast for $20 (!!!) and was presented with what could’ve been a kids meal. The pancakes were cold and they literally cut up one strawberry and threw it on top of a few pieces of arugula. The picture was the plate of food before I even touched it. It was very disappointing. Plus, we were told we had 2 hours before the next table was coming in, totally fine and more than reasonable, except we were asked 4+ times if they could clear our plates before we even hit 45min. This restaurant has been around for a really long time and I’d always been interested in trying it out. Unfortunately, this was my first and last time.

I'm not even sure where to start... Here is the good. The staff was great. Very attentive. Never had to ask for a refill on my drink. They have a very extensive drink menu. The inside ambience was nice from what I saw. Live jazz music. The beet and arugula appetizer was delicious. The staff and that appetizer are the only reason it's not one star. The bad. The food. The bread that they brought out was stale. The burgers that we ordered were both not good. The bun was a little stale, and the bacon was old and dry. The patty itself was just ok. The fries were also old and stale. Really everything just seemed to be old and stale there. You would get better ingredients from McDonald's or burger King for much less. $20 for a burger, it should be much better than what it was. Also, there is a 3% fee if paying by credit which is clearly stated in the menu I will not go back.

Such a disappointment. My husband and I wanted to go out for dinner and decided to go for a nice meal in Ho-Ho-Kus. We wanted good food and service and a beautiful setting. We chose the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and decided to sit outside on the lovely patio. We asked to be seated outside and the server was gracious and said to just sit down at a couple of tables we were directed to. We took a seat and another gentleman tried to turn the gas lamp on because the night was cooler. The lamp was leaking a gas flame from the side, as we knew it could be dangerous and moved to a new location. He got the new heat lamp going without a hitch. We were greeted by our server and given menus. We were then asked if we wanted anything to drink and just decided to order everything at that time to expedite the meal. We watched other people get seated and others get dinners served. We finally got the starter, "Margherita" pizza. It was just ok because it didn't taste freshly made or it had been sitting, waiting to get to our table. The cheese was not gooey at all, just stiff. It looked pretty with the few strips of basil leaves, but not an item that I would order again. We then waited and waited for our dinner. It was a burger dinner and a scallops dinner. It couldn't be that difficult to get out of the kitchen! We watched other tables leave and there was one other table of 4 that had been seated after us that was also waiting. A waiter exited the door with dinners and he whisked by our table and delivered it to the table of 4. After being delivered, the server went back inside and then came out and told the table that they would be moved inside since they were cold. They moved that table and then came up to us and asked us if we would like to move. We said that we would like our dinner! He then sent our server to our table. I told her that I was angry that they were seated after us and we still haven't gotten our dinner. She offered us rolls and apologized saying there was a wedding and it was busy. We said, we didn't want rolls and she then promised to check the kitchen for our food. She then came back and said that it was coming out shortly and then it was delivered (not too mention the temperature was now cold-50 degrees) . The manager then came out and apologized and offered us free desserts, but we declined and my husband said another beer would be nice. It arrived and we ate our meal and our server asked if there was anything else or she could just bring the check. She did and there was a charge for 2 beers on it. At this point , it was comical. The manager adjusted th bill and took off the charge for the pizza as a courtesy. We were the last table to leave the patio. We told our server that we understood that all of these issues were not her fault, but the overall experience was just not...

Cant tell you how disappointed I was last night (night after Christmas). Walked in to a beautifully appointed restaurant and bar that was not too crowded yet had lots of energy - people enjoying themselves everywhere…

Had a great martini from a very pretty, very friendly bar keep… my gal had a great "red by the glass" and then we were seated. That's where the fun ended for us!

The waiter was very nice but not "present" at all - especially when the first round of food came around and was wrong - they quickly brought us the "correct" order of crab cocktail. The top of the cocktail (in a martini glass - very nice) had a few nice pieces of fresh crab meat… under the top was a disgusting "mess" of mayonnaise, lemon, and whatever else they added to make this gross "gelatinous" mix on the bottom of this glass (it took about 1/3 of the volume of this $17.00 app. Next came the NY strip that was "literally" blue and cold in the center… They once again, took it back and quickly returned (with the same piece) absolutely covered in the sauce they had with just a bit more heat added… it was still beyond rare but we ate this "poor" cut of meat ($42.00 by the way) anyway. We asked for a side of potatoes but the waiter neglected to tell us that the meal came with it on the plate - had we been "educated" (because it did not tell us on the menu) to this fact, we would have happily added something else or just not ordered a side at all… All that said - we had to "bus" our own table (even though there were more workers than guests at this point) and pile everything on the corner of the table so I could try to "band-aid" this disaster of a meal with a couple of smiles and warm wishes toward each other… The waiter came over (no apologies whatsoever) took the plates and walked away. He brought over the dessert menu which we kindly refused and asked for the check. I mentioned to him that he, along with his staff made it VERY DIFFICULT for me to be generous - his response was "Oh well" and walked away… (because it was Christmas I "still" left a 20% tip - again with no thanks whatsoever from the wait staff) We left (not one manager / owner / Maitre D was anywhere to be found and we had to go into the "private" closet to get our coats - just adding insult to injury. With all the amazing restaurants, foods, venues so very close, I strongly suggest you give another...

Have been going to HoHoKus Inn for years and the best I can say about it is it is consistently inconsistent. Sometimes the food is cooked to perfection while other times it is is almost inedible. Last night was the latter and when the bill comes to over $80 per person it compels me to vent my dissatisfaction. Had 4:30 pm reservations for outdoor dining for 2. We arrived promptly on time and noticed a gaggle of people leisurely making their way out of the tent, some still holding beverages from what appeared to have been a some type of large celebration. All the tables had to be cleaned and we were told we would have to wait 15 minutes. No problem. Once we were seated a waitress quickly approached to take our order, we barely had a chance to peruse the menu, so we ordered drinks, first. Keep in mind we were the only ones under the tent at this time. We ordered appetizers that we were familiar with , calamari and pizza marguerite. Calamari was overdone and tasteless , the pizza was good. For the main course we had Asian salmon burger which was horrible.Overdone , with one side completely charred. It sat upon something called a sushi rice cake, which also was not edible, you needed a steak knife to even try to cut a piece off which then was too gummy to even chew. My husband chose the pasta with meat sauce and had no complaints. But we did have to wait one hour between our appetizers and dinner. Granted more diners had come it but it wasn't overly busy and they had adequate wait staff. My husband had two Kettle One martinis and remained as sober as I have ever seen him. I am a one and done lightweight and had a Bulliet Bourbon Old Fashion and while very tasty , it had no effect on me whatsoever. Now I have been very understanding of what restaurants have had to endure , pandemic wise. I get why their prices have soared and sometimes they do not have adequate and or professional staff. I can put up with that. What I can't tolerate is substandard fare and watered down drinks when I am paying over $30 for an entree and $15.00...
