Wow. Okay... Let me just start by saying, that I have gone to Derry's quite a few times. And it has always been a pleasure. It's not a fancy looking establishment, but the food is always hot, the serving sizes are good, and the wait staff is always pleasant. The only problem I would run into sometimes, is getting coffee that had been sitting for a while. So, whenever I would order a cup, I specifically ask for freshly-made coffee. Okay, now to the reason I'm giving them 3 stars (which I'm being very generous to give)... I stuck with my usual, and ordered the Fried snapper, with grits, eggs, and toast. My friend ordered Shrimp & grits, and her sister ordered the Smothered pork chop, with eggs, grits, and toast. When the waitress brought our coffee, my friend noticed a piece of hair outside her coffee mug. She didn't make a fuss about it (because these things can happen, right?!). She mentioned it to the waitress, and was brought another cup. Our food arrived, and OMG, my friend then noticed hair was in her grits, when she took up the first spoon full!! 🤦🏾♀️ Like, for real?! But before I go any further, if you're accustomed to the way most restaurants make the Shrimp & Grits dish, then I recommend to not order theirs! It was literally bland looking shrimp on top of grits. There was no gravy or sauce. So, to begin with, that had her disappointed right off top. But, after finding the hair in her grits, (after already having hair on her coffee mug) she was DONE! My breakfast was okay. It was fresh and hot. But I realized immediately that the snapper was way smaller than usual and not as seasoned. And tbh, I don't think it was snapper anyway. My guess is that it was Swai fish instead. As far as the Smothered pork chops, her sister was satisfied with the taste and portion size.. ...So needless to say, this last visit was a little disappointing. Which was a...
Read more1st off , food is made from scratch so expect a loonnnnnggg wait. The servers are nice but not very attentive due to the fact that theres only 2 of them serving like 100 ppl at once. So make sure you come here with lots of patience, if not dont even bother because you will be disappointed. And watch out for cleaniness, this place was a mess when we walked in, 2 tables were sitting empty for at least 10 minutes before someone came to clean it up after the last person which is a really bad impression if you come for the first time. And the seats and floors were all sticky and full of dirty napkins and utencil plastic wrappings..So after the extremely long wait, when the server brought us our waffles and french toast, we had to ask for everything you usually get with it.( butter, syrup, etc) which is a little annoying due to every breakfast place you go to gives you everything at once or brings it at least before it comes to the table. The tilapia with grits was great, pretty good size serving. Loved the thin fried crust and the seasoning. Definitely tasted fresh and not like frozen fish. The french toast was good but a bit disapppointing of presentation, they had ran out of powered sugar which comes standard with french toast. Definitely despite of all the long wait and not so great service , i do recommend to eat here at least once and probably order your food to go for the future. It is worth it for homemade southern food for take out! This place has great potential but needs to have a little better manangement to be able to deal with the amount of people that...
Read moreDerrys just isn't the same as I remembered from a few years ago when me and my dad would always eat here. I was truly disappointed. Smh I don't like to write bad reviews but hopefully it can be corrected for those who decide to eat here.
They have new owners and workers and they don't bring that warm hospitality like before. The owners daughter at the cashier isn't too friendly. Her and the other workers were just shouting at each other across to relay messages. Not a good look.
The cooks can't cook at all! Like how do you mess up scrambled eggs? They didn't let it cook enough bc mine was watery and had this weird aftertaste. My dad's eggs were cooked better but still had a weird aftertaste but he didn't mind it. The swai fish wasn't cooked thoroughly; it had a some pink on the inside.
The only thing that was half decent was the French toast which is regular sliced bread and not the thick Texas toast. And I was still charged for the fish and grits after I told the waitress it was nasty but she said she didn't charge me for the additional French toast.. chile, I would have rather paid for the toast than the fish n grits that I sent back. I didn't argue I just charged it to the game.
So yea me n my dad won't be back there again smh and it's a shame bc Derrys was a family staple and we always love to support black business. This was an unfortunate experience and I truly hope you all can be more respectful and courteous for your current and...
