Today while out on a drive to a couple local lakes; "thanks" to a great guy who suggested me doing a 'me time' drive! 😉 After watching the sunset at Banner lake, I decided to visit Trails cafe in Holton. I have been here several times, but not for a couple years. Last time was with my BESTEST KC friend Jules. Before that, while passing through paying taxes in the court house. Also while working at the casino; (Harrah's) that was a few years ago. 😂 Anyways, if you've never been, you don't know what great food you're missing out on. Let alone, the atmosphere, the great staff and of course, the cooks! It's a family style place, which if you ask me, that's the best kind of place to look for. Unless you're a drive thru sue, but then, you can order ahead, if you know you're going to be passing through here. I highly recommended the lemon meringue pie and the peanut butter dessert. But then, I am sure they're all good. Don't miss this place if you're ever in Holton KS. They also have a gift shop with lots of homemade looking items. I did not go in there, only because, well, because I don't trust myself not to spend more $. 😁 And I had already looked in the windows; knew I'd be there another hour, had I stopped after eating. Seriously, great place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just to shop. Thanks to my server, (he was new), but you wouldn't have known it. He was so polite and didn't hound me, or forget about me, like some waiters/ waitresses. You guys are all amazing. Keep cooking and they'll all come! I know I'll be back! 😉❣ PS: I totally forgot to take a picture once my food came. Guess I musta been even more hungry than I thought. I did have the patty melt burger on marbled rye with the works. And of course, the home made chips. 😋 Decided to ad my half eaten dessert after all. 😁 Trust me, you'll...
Read more(Oct 18, 2021) It's a decent Cafe, I've been here before and never had any complaints. Today I went here on a date for breakfast, got biscuits & gravy and hash browns. The bottoms of the biscuits were so hard it almost hurt my hand to cut through them. The hash browns were half undercooked and half overcooked, the overcooked part was so hard it made cracking noises as I tried to chew it. Probably won't be back but that doesn't mean others shouldn't give it a try. Staff is very friendly.
Edit: And in response to your answer, I would've preferred to not have to complain about the food at all but we don't always get what we want :) I'm not a confrontational person and that's not going to change because you wanted a chance to right a wrong that shouldn't have been wrong in the first place, so I apologize that you'll never get that chance. Also telling me that your home cooked food is cooked fresh daily doesn't mean that it can't be cooked wrong. I came at the end of breakfast so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, I just wasn't prepared for what I got. Additionally, I don't have a preference for my hash browns for the most part, I just don't think it should hurt to chew them :(
Hahahaha, wooooow. Okay.
(Jan 3, 2025) Editing this again to add more images since the other person removed their responses and this is still getting some attention. Also, as pictured, this was originally just a 3 star review since Google asks me to rate places again every time I visit. So it was just based off that specific visit. I do actually hope more people check out the restaurant and have a much better experience than I did...
Read moreThis place was praised to me by quite a few people that I know on how good the food is and such. Anyways, my ratings are based solely on my experience while there and not the dissapointment of the hype.
We went there for a dinner meal. I don't even remember what I ordered but I remember it wasn't good. I wasn't eating my meal thinking "man I have to come back again". My lady's dad (it was his birthday) had ordered a burger well done with bacon and the first time his burger came pretty pink throughout the middle and had no bacon. He just ignored the bacon because it took around 30-35mins for the food to arrive (I thought I was in a German restaurant waiting that long). There was too much pink inside for him to ignore So he had to send it back to cook longer. Eventually it came back and it was still pink, just more only in the middle.
He gave up and never touched his burger. Just a salad (and they have s very good salad bar) and fries if I remember right. We had to hunt our waitress down every time. Waitress was very sweet and very nice. My group is a mature group. We smile and converse. We also tip very generously just so the review Readers know.
Disclaimer: I understand these types of restaurants have the I bad days. Everyone I know who spoke of this place spoke highly of it. I went there when it was busy and what seemed like they were short staffed and despite those elements, the attitudes of the employees were still friendly. My experience was horrible, but it doesn't mean this place is...
