Having been a huge fan of the Nick's in Romeoville, and having been very sad when they closed without warning, I was thrilled to find this Nick's fairly close to home. So on our way to Big R, we stopped in here, my taste buds already anticipating that incredible pulled pork sandwich.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the same. It should have been - but it was not. The sandwich was still huge and the bun was still soft, but the star of the show, that incredible BBQ sauce, simply wasn't a star. It lacked the flavor that elevated their sandwich from "good" to "incredible". It was also thinner, even watery. Every time I ate there in Romeoville, I was so covered in thick BBQ sauce by the time I was done that it was a challenge even to open the bathroom door to wash my hands. Here, a napkin did the job.
The rest of the food was also just "good" but, again, nothing special. My father asked for sweet peppers on his sub but said it was so hot he could barely eat it, suggesting someone ignored his request. The coleslaw was as good as I remembered, but coleslaw does not a meal make.
The other thing that made that Nick's fun was that it was a smaller place, the tables close together, encouraging friendliness and even occasional banter between tables. It felt homey and inviting. Here, there's a lot of space for a small number of tables. Unless you're sitting at the back to back booths (which have little sitting room), you'd almost have to yell to talk to people at another table. (And I'm sure they would think you were quite strange if you did.) This place lacks that inviting vibe that existed in Romeoville.
In short, I would probably return if I was in the area, if only to give them a second chance, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at...
Read moreQuite possibly the most disgusting “food” I’ve ordered in a long time. Food has been going downhill but tonight takes the cake. Ordered a chicken parm, which ended up being grilled chicken strips with about a tablespoon of dried-out red sauce on top of soggy spaghetti noodles. Not enough sauce to even cover the chicken let alone the noodles. The whole thing covered in rubbery melted cheese. Baked mostaccioli prepared the same way. No sauce at all. Noodles cooked within an inch of their lives. So called “cheese” everywhere. Garlic bread a squashed soppy mess. And to top it off the fried zucchini sticks were cold in the middle.
I called to inquire how a chicken parm was prepared after receiving said abomination and I was told that unless you specifically ask for a fried chicken breast then their standard way of making a chicken parm is a sliced grilled chicken breast. I could have lived with that except that the rest of the meal wasn’t even fit to feed to the dogs. When I called staff was rude and indignant blaming the poor preparation on us not knowing to specifically order a fried chicken breast with sauce on the noodles as well. Isn’t that how chicken parm is typically made?
Ended up eating Chef Boyardee which was practically gourmet in comparison to...
