Baltimore Food and Liquors — Restaurant in Hyde Park Township

I used to come through Hedgewisch way back when you could take 130th straight through to Baltimore Ave. Many years later, I was working far on the south side and thought I'd swing through to see the neighborhood. I remembered Baltimore Foods from back then and it came up again in my search for someplace to go for lunch. I saw the mentions of their shish kabob meat and had to have it. So I toted a cooler as I headed down. The store is a full scale liquor store with loads of ice cold beer and also a full service deli where they will slice an array of meats and cheeses to order. The kabob meat is bagged up in a cooler near the register and there are a couple different types, I went with the 'original' and got about 3lbs. The girl behind the counter was kind and asked if I needed skewers and I gladly purchased those as well. I grabbed a bag of ice and made my way out. I believe the owner was hanging out chatting with someone inside the store, by the time I left their conversation had continued outside and as I walked to my vehicle he said 'thanks buddy'. I told him he was welcome - my excitement was nearly overwhelming! I packed away my meat and ice in my cooler and made the long trek home. Last night I jammed the meat on sticks with huge chunks of onion and some cherry tomatoes. I grilled them slowly over charcoal and accompanied them some warm pita and a quick yogurt sauce. I ate my weight in shish as my girl also was delighted. But most staggering of all is that her daughter who is a world renowned picky eater (at the age of 8) also enjoyed the meat! I USED TO LOVE COMING HERE UP UNTIL THE OTHER DAY. I WAS HIGHLY OFFENDED BY THE OWNER HIMSELF… HE WAS CHECKING ME OUT AT THE REGISTER WHEN HE ASKED IF I NEEDED A BAG & I REPLIED, “YES, PLEASE.” I THEN PULLED OUT MY EBT CARD(FOOD STAMPS), MIND YOU I WORK & PAY TAXES LIKE ANYONE ELSE BUT, IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT I’M STILL APPROVED FOR A SMALL AMOUNT OF FOOD STAMPS. ANYWAYS, AFTER PULLING OUT MY EBT CARD HE ASKED HOW I WAS PAYING & I REPLIED, “WITH EBT.” HE THEN SNATCHED THE BAG UP, WITH HOSTILITY, &, ANGRILY SAID, “NO, NO BAG FOR YOU, IF YOU WANT A BAG YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR A BAG”, AS IF I HADN’T ANY MONEY TO PAY FOR THE BAG TAX DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS PAYING WITH FOOD STAMPS!!! I FELT SO DEGRADED & EMBARRASSED!!! COMPLETE DISCRIMINATION!!!
