I recently attempted to dine at Nobu, expecting a first-class experience befitting the restaurant’s renowned reputation. Unfortunately, what I encountered was anything but. When the 20 something female tried to seat us at the worst table in the establishment we politely asked to be moved to another table but were promptly informed that those were for VIP clients only (Despite the restaurant being at about 10% capacity). Being a loyal patron of fine dining establishments, I was treated like a second-rate guest simply because I wasn’t classified as “VIP” status.
From the moment we arrived, it was evident that the staff prioritized certain patrons over others, creating a palpable divide that no one should experience when dining out. Basic courtesies, attentiveness, and respect were seemingly reserved for their so-called elite clientele, leaving the rest of us to feel like afterthoughts.
The atmosphere was also less than desirable. Rather than feeling like a fine dining experience it felt like a small sports bar.
As someone who frequently organizes business dinners and events for colleagues and clients, I expected professionalism and equality in service, not to be brushed aside as though my presence was inconsequential. This treatment was not only unwarranted but also deeply disappointing for an establishment of Nobu’s caliber.
Needless to say, I will not be bringing my business to this location in the future. Respect and hospitality should be extended to every guest, regardless of their perceived status. Nobu has lost a loyal customer and advocate in me, and I will not hesitate to share this experience with my professional and...
Read moreI’ve been to a handful of Nobu restaurants. Surging in popularity in the 90’s, Nobu is now situated across the world and even has a hotel arm.
My most recent visit was to the Palo Alto location and I found the found ok but way overpriced and rather lackluster relying on glory dishes of the past. It was a sad comparison to my prior dining experience at a Nobu in Hong Kong.
As I stopped by the newest location in Indian Wells and the popular Southern California retreat of Palm Desert, I was uncertain which Nobu I’d get that night.
Thankfully, I’m happy to report it’s the best kind with a modern interior, great and fun wait staff, and a menu that had all the old classics but has added some nice new touches.
The interior is dim but spacious and after a walk through a pro tennis venue, you find yourself in a modern restaurant with high ceilings and large glass windows (to view aforementioned tennis courts). The staff are all friendly and we quickly had fun with our server who did a great job with food and drink recommending for those who had been and those who had not been to Nobu.
Pro tip this time is to order the signature black miso cod in butter lettuce cups that completely changed the dish and to definitely try the spinach miso salad.
The fish selection is also impressive for the desert and we ordered a nigiri section of both traditional and new style sushi that put a smile on my face.
Finally, the sake and drink selection are comprehensive and we did great with our sake choice. Overall, a great meal and a great night.

Every dish we tried showcased incredibly fresh fish, and the accompanying sauces were simply divine, elevating each bite to a new level. The Yellowtail Jalapeño is an absolute must-try – a dish that perfectly balances delicate flavors with a delightful kick. Another standout was the Wagyu burger, which was incredibly juicy and packed with flavor. And don't even get me started on the tempura shrimp! It was cooked to perfection, and all the sauces served alongside it clearly had so much care and thought put into their creation.
