The torta menu overwhelmed me when I first walked in, immediately succeeded by more customers. Feeling the pressure to order food and move on for those behind me, I quickly asked the cashier for her torta recommendation. She promptly and enthusiastically suggested the Cubano, which I ordered without fully understanding the ingredients listed (not meant to be derogatory, but the broken English translations on the menu left me utterly confused--and I speak Spanish relatively fluently after living in Peru for a year of my life). My fiancee ordered a burrito, and we each got a bottle of water, totaling $17 (a little expensive if you ask me, but I was optimistic that the food would maybe be awesome and worth the price).
We picked a booth and sat down. Several of the booths near us had remnants of previous customers' meals left untended, and while our table had been cleared of food it clearly had not been wiped down. We both work in the industry, so I just cleaned the table myself as best I could with the napkins from the dispenser on the table.
Now onto the food... The only reason this review got a single star is due to the yummy, roasted salsa that they served with hearty corn tortilla chips. My fiancee's burrito was acceptable, but nothing too exciting. My torta was one of the weirdest things I've eaten in awhile (and I've willingly and excitedly devoured both beef heart and beef tongue in the past week). If you've had a "cubano" sandwich elsewhere before, the only thing in this torta that resembles it is the ham (which was overprocessed). The sandwich also contained three other types of processed meats: some sort of nondescript beef product, a very red colored pork belly-like product, and (most oddly) cut up hot dogs (at least 2 whole dogs in total). This meat-heavy sandwich was finished off with melted cheese, tomato, lettuce, and (thankfully) avocado. I think the weirdest thing about the whole sandwich was its complete lack of flavor. Literally the only two flavors that I could taste in any given bite was hot dog and (again, thankfully) avocado. After removing the offensive hot dogs, all I could taste was avocado (which is not a bad flavor to me at all, but was perplexing given the slew of meats on this torta). I even tried to jazz up the torta with some of the house tomatillo (which I had previously tried on the chips, and which I had found to be very flavorful); however, I could not even taste this when eating the torta afterward--I believe this speaks to the completely overprocessed meat products.
Overall, due to the menu confusion, lack of cleanliness, and bland, overprocessed entrees, I presently have no plans of returning in the future. I'm very disappointed to feel this way as I was excited to try the restaurant, and had even been hopeful (prior to our meal) that it would become a new favorite restaurant near our home. I recommend saving your money (and your stomach) by ordering your...
Read moreI have visited Tortas a number of times in the past and had a favorable impression, but regrettably, this time not so much.
On entering the shop, I noticed that a major section of tables was blocked off and the unblocked tables were not very clean. We struggled to find a place to sit down and eat.
Next, I noticed that the menu has been changed, alcoholic beverages eliminated and prices raised dramatically.
My mother got the vegetarian burrito for $13.99. No side of frijoles or guacamole or rice, just a burrito. In fairness, the taste was good but the price was outrageous. I got a quesadilla for $5.99. Again it was delicious but quite small. We paid over $20 and left the shop still hungry!
Basically no decorations, no music and very little in the way of atmosphere but at least, the restrooms were clean and kept up. The lady at the register was friendly and most of the customers seemed to be regulars which is a good sign generally.
Pro Tip This shop is in a pretty seedy area of abandoned buildings and cracked parking lots so you might do well to visit in the daylight hours rather than at night,...
Read moreExtremely expensive for 2 plain bean burritos. No "A La Cart" or "Sides" menu items. Around 28 minute wait for first order. I was only customer when ordering. One other customer arrived after me. I would be giving 3 stars but they got my incredibly easy order wrong, so I had to drive back. Only 10 minutes waiting after I had to return my order. The previous customers were gone leaving just me until another customer came in after I had explained the mixup. First time visiting this restaurant because it is within a half mile of my home. Despite being so close; I'll not be returning. That is factoring the price as the highest factor everything else low priority. The total time spent was around 1 hour as I started out my house at 6:35pm and arrive home with correct order at 7:44pm. You can get a similiar meal for half the price at TWO locations within a mile.
Edit; pretty sure this restaurant does not prefer non Spanish-language...
