Updated 2025.06.02. Definitely one of the best if not the best place in town for halibut fish and chips, a must visit destination. We brought a group over here visiting from New York. Everyone enjoyed the halibut fish and chips who ordered that. Their clam chowder, cole slaw, shrimp basket were also excellent. One observed the bartender on duty on Memorial Day were consuming shots with the customers and drunk, so some of our orders were delayed or lost.
Best to order your food not from the bartender but directly from their kitchen. If you don't drink alcohol, you may order and dine in their kitchen dining area. The bar area can be darker with more of their atmosphere.
Reachable by public bus at Brotherhood Bridge stop.
Updated 2025.04.15. The halibut fish and chips is deffinately worth coming over here for, now USD30 for eight piece order. The halibut wasn't overcooked, moist and tasty. Try tasting their chips with mayonnaise instead of ketchup. Their chips are different cut than before and quite good.
Update 2022.02.23 Face masks no longer enforced. We ordered their Big Boy Halibut with Chips eight pieces to share and requested that the fish be pulled from the fryer two minutes early as I like my fish moist and succulent, not overcooked. The fish arrived moist. No chowder nor salad available. Chowder quality varies, sometimes it's good, sometimes not. When they had salad available it was was a nice addition.
Update 2021.05.02 16:30 We arrived with face masks on, chose to sit at the large table for eight nearby the front main entrance. The female bartender did not wear a face mask, ignored us for about ten minutes. We concluded she was ignoring us intentionally, and left, so now the star rating is the lowest, one.
Update 2020.08.15 23:30 The bartender was wearing a face mask, but all of the customers weren't. We chose to sit at a table far away from everyone else in the back, near the pool tables. Their Super Chicken Blue sandwich, chicken was overdone, dried out. This used to be a place to have to come for their halibut & chips. Now I wouldn't recommend this place except as a late dinner option when the kitchen is still open, and if you're not picky, not want to cook at home.
This was THE place for once the best beer battered halibut in Juneau. It's downside is that they've been overcooking the halibut the last several visits.
It's nowhere near downtown, it's in the valley, drive or bus stop at the Brotherhood Bridge.
The kitchen used to do an excellent job of Halibut and chips, not overcooked, succulent, but sadly they now overcook the halibut so it comes out dry. I don't personally care for their salads made with iceberg lettuce, but when it's not iceberg, it's pretty good, their honey mustard dressing is way too sweet. Their clam chowder is way too salty.
Their super chicken sandwich and Western cheeseburger is pretty good.
Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays @ 2200 are Karaoke nights. Go there on those nights and be prepared for some off tuned singing, choose to sit at the opposite end of the bar away from the singing. Credit...

After a long day of traveling from Las Vegas, my 13-year-old daughter and I landed in Juneau, tired and very hungry. I called The Sandbar to check if I could bring her along for dinner, and they were super accommodating, welcoming us with open arms. While she couldn’t sit at the bar, they made sure we felt right at home, which was a much-needed comfort after our day.
We got there right before closing, but they didn’t rush us at all. My daughter ordered a cheeseburger meal, and I went with the Western Buffalo Burger. Both were great – large portions, cooked perfectly, and super satisfying. My daughter polished off her burger and fries, commenting on how good everything was, and I almost finished mine! The onion rings were fresh, not frozen, and the burger was exactly how I like it – a perfect medium-rare. I also had a couple of beers, which were reasonably priced.
While we were waiting for our Lyft, I had a nice chat with the lady who runs the restaurant and another friendly employee who used to be a ski instructor. They were both so cool, offering great recommendations on things to do in Juneau and local spots to avoid the cruise ship crowds.
For our first night in town, The Sandbar was the perfect introduction to Juneau’s welcoming vibe. If you’re ever near the airport and don’t feel like sitting around waiting for a flight, swing by The Sandbar. Great food, friendly people, and a relaxed atmosphere –...
