Stopped by this place while visiting I'm the area. It's in a beautiful downtown area and the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxing.
I visited around noon on say and it appeared like there was only one person working her. So it took a few minutes before she could even take our orders. She seamed to work a little slow and was putting all the drinks in to-go cups, so I'm guessing she didn't know how to make Latte art. When I think of a good coffee shop I think of a place where the baristas are fast, know there drinks and give you a drink in a mug that looks as good as it tastes. When she finished my drink she took my payment, swiped my card and handed it back and to my knowledge, said nothing. Then she asked if the guy that was with me was going to order. It was a bit confusing because it was like she thought we were on the same order. When she noticed I was confused she asked if I wanted a receipt but I declined. Offering a receipt for your order should be a standard thing, you don't just hand someone's card back to them and not tell them what's next. It was because of the service that I removed one star. The atmosphere is great, and the drinks I would say are above average and definitely better than a place like Starbucks. Hopefully if you come you will get a good barista and don't get the...
Read moreStoped by the Kalona coffee house while visiting Kalona. They were busy. One girl working the counter and the machines. Another girl came in, eyes wide at the back up... She began talking and filling orders. Then a third (girl / employee) came up and said do you need help? The original two said"no" so the third left. Not sure why. When we (me and my companion) made it to the counter we both ordered the house coffee (it should be faster, right?). Faster to pay. A few bucks two empty paper cups and directied to the thermal pump thermos things. Not enough coffee to fill one regular cup.
My friend and I split it and to tried to top off our cups with uncafinated. Then it ran ok out.
I pulled the empty pump thermos containers from their position and placed them on the service counter. The one girl said "thanks" and that was it. We left, no big deal, just headin home (100 miles) with a little coffee betwen us.
I get they are Ma/Pa but this was not worth the wait...
Read moreThis little coffee shop is a hive of activity in this quaint little town where they must value it highly. I stop here every time I'm in Kalona as it's a quick option for hot coffee for my drove back to Cedar Rapids. The coffee is good. The counter help is mostly disinterested. I wouldn't say it's dirty but it's also not the cleanest. But this may be to their high volume of traffic. I have never had the food so I really should comment as N/A but I can see that it's the standard fare of scones and muffins. They do have a nice display of the amazing chocolates from the Kalona Chocolate Shop which is just around the corner from this shop and well...
