Dairy Queen Store - Treat Only — Restaurant in Kankakee

Always a friendly staff. The new tropical lemonade twisty misty slush was a hit with my kids. My wife loves their cookie dough blizzards. Would have been 5 stars but I tried something new, their crunch buster bar, and it was not good. I love their crunch cones or crunch blizzard, anything covered in crunch topping. When I saw they had a new take on the buster bar that had layers of crunch and was covered in crunch topping I was excited to try. It was a disappointing. The crunch topping was different. First I thought that maybe because it was prepared ahead the topping had just changed over time being already mixed with the ice cream. But the more I looked at it and ate the more I came to the conclusion that it was a different topping entirely, most likely made to withstand being in contact with ice cream for hours or days without going soggy. It was darker and smaller chunks, that while still crunchy were not as crunchy as normal, and the taste was much more bland. Not gross but not much of anything really. If all this post has done is steer one person away from this new abomination that does not deserve to have the crunch name, and towards another tastier treat, then my job...

This DQ is near our house, and we love it! The staff is always friendly and efficient, even with special orders. My reason for not giving 5 stars is not about this DQ itself. Rather, it is a mild protest and an appeal to the Noble family who owns the DQ stores in the Kankakee area. As I understand it, Sherb Noble started DQ, and this one near our house is where he test marketed his soft serve ice cream before he and the McCulloughs opened the first DQ in Joliet. This DQ is the oldest operating one in IL and one of the oldest in the country. The Noble family wants to preserve their DQ locations in their original layout, so there is not a Grill and Chill within 25 miles of here. (The one in Clifton sells its own version of DQ grill items, to the best of my knowledge.) Come on, Noble family! Allowing genuine Grill and Chill restaurants in Manteno and Momence isn't going to hurt the business at the Kankakee and Bourbonnais locations. Can't you compromise even a little? Eating a DQ meal once in a while isn't going to reduce anyone's quick trips for Blizzards and Peanut...

I went this morning to get 2 Ice cream cakes. Horrible service I initially asked for a oreo cake a woman who seemed to be a manager snapped that they didn't have any oreo cakes. I responded okay well I need two cakes I was then asked well what kind do you you want. I said can I have two of the birthday decorated ones she said the plain ones not knowing what she meant I said yes please. Then she asked me what size I asked what they had she said 8 or 10 I said how about 2 10s she said no I have a 8 and a 10. There was zero customer service zero guidance and zero smile I spent 70 dollars on two plain cakes. I said nothing more because I felt like an inconvenience to the employees. The cake quality is always A 1 but this experience makes me think maybe next time I should go...
